I've now set up a company to support on-farm research - if you are interested in testing products or practices on-farm please feel free to contact me on daniel@arcagsci.com.I come from a small arable farm in Suffolk and developed a passion for the science of agriculture whilst studying Agriculture at University of Nottingham (1st Class Honours Degree) and six months of potato research at Cambridge University Farm before a PhD in Agronomy at Reading University, investigating the physiological basis of heterosis in hybrid wheat yield and quality. I joined the Crop Physiology team at ADAS in 2004 as a Research Scientist working principally on understanding and reducing the nitrogen requirements of wheat. I managed, won and led a range of projects using crop management and breeding to improve crop performance, especially in relation to grain yield, nitrogen efficiency, biofuel production, GHG emissions and precision farming. I helped create the Yield Enhancement Network in 2012 and from 2017 I led development of ADAS' Agronomics approach to farmer-centric research, through ideas & benchmarking networks like YEN and farmer-led spatial experimentation at field scale. In 2021 I co-created FarmPEP as a knowledge sharing platform - www.farmpep.net.In January 2023 I joined Anglo American as Crop Scientist in the Science & Solutions team of the Crop Nutrients business, with the opportunity to re-imagine crop nutrition with the unique mineral polyhalite, which will be mined in North Yorkshire and sold across the world. I developed the concept of Nutrient Performance to consider the innovations and practices we could employ to minimise fertiliser use, maximise crop performance, improve soil health and optimise environmental performance. I worked with farmers and researchers around the world, initiating the Agronomy Research Circle to demonstrate the performance of new products and practices on-farm.
