This type of assessment looks at the experience clients have moving through your services to see if (or how) the process is working against motivation. For instance, long waits, long appointments, and being talked to by multiple people about the same things is likely to harm engagement and possibly decrease motivation. After the initial assessment, we will explore ideas about how to make modifications and develop a plan for further action, often including staff training and developing outcome measures to track our progress. Organizations and practitioners with a mission to help clients make behavior changes. Individuals at home who are trying to help their loved ones make difficult behavior changes. Motivational Interviewing training lays the foundation for practicing communication skills that help clients, patients and loved ones decide to make important behavior changes. Case Study - Csula School Of Social Work | Mi Companion Integration
Professor Nahabedian contacted me regarding using the online practice platform in her interviewing skills and field seminar classes. She was looking for new ways to help her students learn the basics of reflective listening and Motivational Interviewing. While she had always discussed and practiced these skills in the classroom, she wanted a way to help them practice them more outside of the classroom. Professor Nahabedian and I discussed a model for including the MI Companion in her syllabus as a credit/no credit assignment. She gave the students plenty of time to complete the 6 modules, while I responded to the student responses and gave her updates about student activity. Students reported being grateful for the experience and training in Motivational Interviewing. They reported a greater understanding of the importance and practice of reflective listening, and felt as though the skills would make them a better social worker. As for Professor Nahabedian, in her video testimonial below, she states that she wouldn't teach those classes without the MI Companion again.
Case Study - Pediatric Obesity Clinic | Motivational Assessment | Consulting | Training
A pediatric obesity clinic at a large hospital in Los Angeles contacted me to train their staff in the Motivational Interviewing. At our first training, staff shared details about what the patients experience at a typical appoint: long wait times before the appointment started as well as wait times between seeing the 4 professionals they were required (by insurance) to see during each visit (unless they wanted to come back on a different day). In addition, often each of the professionals would cover similar topics without any knowledge of what the others had talked about. Patients could easily experience 4 'mini" lectures about their diet & exericse of the course of 2+ hours. Next StepsFollowing the training, I came back for a day of live observation in the clinic. I sat in the waiting room, I sat in on patient sessions (with their permission), and I interviewed staff about their ideas and suggestions. After the day of live observation, I made recommendations to the clinic director about how to improve the client experience as a way to increase client autonomy, engagement and motivation. ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐The clinic found a way to implement all of the recommendations, giving patients a more active role in the process and not just waiting around to be seen and be talked to. These changes have resulted in increases in the patient's level of engagement during their appointments as well as their engagement in their health.
