Profile bio

About Maggie Macpherson

I am an evolutionary ecologist who studies the relationship between movement ecology and animal distributions. My research is nested within the fields of biogeography, spatial statistics, and global change and I primarily focus on birds to test hypotheses explaining range dynamics at short (seasonal), medium (last century), and long (evolutionary time) timescales. I got my start in Ornithology by volunteering to band migratory raptors at a local banding station in northern Ontario while I was in high school. This was the spark that led me to not only fall in love with birds as a study group, but also become obsessed with why only some birds migrate. I've studied the proximate and ultimate drivers of bird migration ever since, and strive to contribute timely and enduring insight into spatial (land conservation) and temporal (i.e., seasonal resource needs; the land management aspect) of wildlife conservation and management. In my spare time you may find me out on a run, birding, or hanging out with my Catahoula Leopard dog, Lucy.

Listed skills include Field Work, Ecology, Research, Scientific Writing, and 46 others.

Professionel.Le De Recherche

Québec, Qc, CA

I am working to predict boreal bird distributions under global change in the next 50 years with different forestry practices.

Apr 2022 - Aug 2023

Postdoctoral Scholar

Oakland, California, US

I studied the behavioral flexibility of Great-tailed Grackles (Quiscalus mexicanus) to better understand how animal behavior may influence avian range expansions.

Aug 2019 - Sep 2020

Postdoctoral Fellow

Columbia, MO, US

I built Bayesian belief network models for wetland-dependent species to help the Missouri Department of Conservation meet the goals of the Wetland Planning Initiative.

Sep 2017 - Jul 2019

Postdoctoral Researcher

Tulane University

Ecology of urban birds in and around New Orleans.

May 2017 - Sep 2017

Phd Student

Tulane University

I used a variety of methods to look at why birds may evolve long distance migration in the new world. These included: 1) spatial statistical modelling using geolocator data and weather data, 2) dynamic programming/optimal annual routine modelling on an evolutionary time scale, 3) using museum specimens to look at trends in morphology of migratory.

Aug 2011 - May 2017

Bander Trainer

Western Hemisphere Bird Banding Network

As a certified NABC bander trainer I have participated in a number of training programs in South America. My main focus for presentations has been ensuring the safety of wild birds, in particular, when harnessing birds with geolocators or radio-tags.
