I specialize in the memorialization of conflict and trauma, with a particular focus on commemoration of the Holocaust. My Ph.D thesis concerns the Berlin Holocaust Memorial Competition of the 1990s, analyzing some of the unbuilt proposals and the winning design by Peter Eisenman. The thesis discusses issues of empathy, the uncanny, and cultural memory, looking at new ways of representing the genocide and additional ways of understanding viewer participation through selected designs. I am an accomplished tutor and presenter, with a strong record of teaching on a variety of art historical and historical subjects, from the Italian Renaissance to the Cuban Revolution, from the Nazis’ Degenerate Art exhibition to the history of Imperial Russia.My published work includes art history articles for several publications, including BBC History, the Independent on Sunday, Architect Weekly, and Art Times, New York. Further, academic research, is published with Inter-disciplinary Press, Brill Publishing, and Dandelion Journal. This work includes research concerning changes to Northern Irish Political Murals since the Good Friday Agreement, the leaving of personal mementoes at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Jochen Gerz’s invisible Holocaust memorial.
