Enterprise Mobile Development Team Lead
Technical Group Lead, User Interface Development Group
Lead Designer/Developer: Spacecraft Assembly Workflow Tracking System
Designed and implemented end-to-end system to support tracking spacecraft assembly workflow from design to launch. Software system built using Node.js server-side, Javascript front-end with native iOS and Android client applications for end users on mobile devices. Engineering and QA use QR coded labels to identify and track all parts of a spacecraft from receiving to final assembly, testing, and launch. Mobile platform also provides for continuous photo documentation, annotation, and indexed searching of all the events during assembly and testing for later comparison with spacecraft performance in operational use.
Lead Designer/Developer: Mars Images Mobile Application
Designed and developed native mobile apps for iOS and Android phones and tablet devices. The "Mars Images" mobile app delivers real-time updates of images and mission data from the Mars rovers Opportunity and Curiosity. Features include image browsing, interactive mapping and 3D mosaicking of images using high performance OpenGL. The application is free to download and open source on GitHub.
Principal Investigator: Earthkit
Led the design and development of tools for teaching and performing science data analysis using Amazon Web Services cloud technology and Docker lightweight application containers. Worked with leading scientific experts in radar image interferometric processing and time series analysis to create a virtual classroom on the cloud for scientists and students to learn about using software to process radar images. Used Docker application containers to create an App Store inspired repository of Earth science software tools and libraries.
Curiosity Mars Rover Engineering Camera Uplink Lead
Responsible for commanding the operation of Curiosity Hazard Avoidance Camera and Navigation Camera image capture. Liaised with rover drivers, robotic arm planners, and science investigation team to plan image capture to support rover operations.
Product Lead: Curiosity Mars Rover Command And Visualization (Mslice)
Mars Science Laboratory rover operations Interface (MSLICE) * Leading development of the premier software for operating NASA's next Mars rover, the Mars Science Laboratory (a.k.a. Curiosity) * Managing team of 10 developers, designers and testers * Primary interface with product stakeholders, negotiate feature development and release schedule * Developing key features for rover visualization, image processing, terrain mapping, targeting and commanding * First person to introduce Scrum development to NASA on this project, now it's going viral * First project to use cloud computing to gain performance, scalability and overcome infrastructure challenges * Software tool based on Eclipse Rich Client Platform used by hundreds of engineers, ops specialists and science investigators * Follow-on project to the operations software tool for the Spirit and Opportunity rovers' ongoing mission: winner of the NASA Software of the Year award in 2004
Mission Commander: Jpl Aerobot
Mission commander for JPL Aerobot flight tests. The JPL Aerobot is an unmanned aerial vehicle and a technology testbed for proving automation for a future mission to Saturn's moon Titan. Led operations planning and telemetry monitoring software systems for field operations of the JPL Aerobot.
Principal Investigator: Tactical Rover-Based Martian Geologic Mapping
Proposed and led software research task: Tactical Rover-based Martian Geologic Mapping.Invented revolutionary process and tools advanced localization and mapping software tools for performing real-time geologic mapping during daily Mars rover operations planning cycle. Using 2D mapping and 3D interactive terrain visualization, this project established an order of magnitude increase in efficient, accurate process of mapping the location and movement of rovers on the surface of Mars. This technology is an integral component of the process that NASA uses to operate the Opportunity and Curiosity Mars Rovers.
Software Designer/Developer: Phoenix Science Interface (Psi)
Co-developed Phoenix Software Interface (PSI) for telemetry analysis and mission operations planning for the Phoenix Mars Lander mission. Features included mosaic visualization, targeting and arm reachability simulation.
Visualization Software Designer/Developer: Jpl Athlete Robotic Vehicle
Co-developed ATHLETE operations software systems for field operations of JPL ATHLETE robotic assets to investigate feasibility of new technologies for lunar in-situ human-robotic operations. Features include 3D visualization, command and control, telemetry visualization and mapping.
Science Downlink Coordinator: Spirit And Opportunity Mars Rovers
Science Downlink Coordinator for the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission. Acted as communications interface between Athena Science team, SRET engineering staff, MIPL and MDOT ground data system staff, Athena Student interns, and Education/Public Outreach staff, and performed round-trip data product tracking from telemetered data products to uplink command sequences.
Software Designer/Developer: Spirit And Opportunity Rover Planning And Visualization Software
Designed and implemented advanced data visualization for conventional and hyper-spectral imagery for the Mars Exploration Rover mission science team, specifically image cubes, data fusion, high-speed dynamic mosaics, and 3D graphical terrain and rover simulation for the Science Activity Planning (SAP) MER operations interface.
Software Designer/Developer: Maestro Mars Rover Public Outreach App
Co-developed Maestro, the MER public outreach version of the SAP science planning interface with focus on low resource utilization (modest RAM, disk, and CPU requirements, highly compressed data products) and engaging graphical interface features including mosaic views and 3D rover simulation.
