Analysing and understanding complex systems is one of my greatest strengths. By obtaining a PhD in math, I learned how deep and non-obvious the underlying concepts of such systems can be (like using ideas from dynamical systems to understand conflicts). It trained me in constructing meaningful abstractions in vague and messy situations, like in adjudicating debates. I am able to shift between different levels of abstraction easily, between a high-level overview and detail-oriented precision. This shifting makes applying abstract concepts to concrete situations very easy.I love learning new concepts, especially to understand how the world works. This motivates my interest in such diverse topics as math, physics, computer science, economics, philosophy, and psychology. I am thus easily motivated to learn new skills to complete a given project successfully. For example, when given the task to write a software package, I quickly learned design principles of software and documentation. This enabled me to write a good, usable package.I like working on challenging, diverse, and interesting tasks, ideally together with equally passionate colleagues. This leads to me being interested in the work of others as well as my own. For example, during my time at the VCI, I discussed the projects of several colleagues with them and was often able to give them some bit of helpful insight.
