In this position I lead Glasgow Science Centre’s STEM employability projects which aim to create pathways to STEM employment, especially for young people from areas of high deprivation, by building their confidence and skills and making vital connections to the world of work. The role will focuses mainly on partnership development and project management.

• Support teaching staff and pupils during science practical lessons• Ensure efficient preparation and organisation of science equipment for lessons• Direct and adjust working arrangements for the technical team as appropriate to meet fluctuations in workload and ensure cover for absent colleagues as required • Co-ordinate the science technical team with weekly requisition sheets and clear communication, including leading meetings where appropriate• Work in collaboration with the head of department to set and manage departmental budgets • Manage departmental equipment and materials and ensure stock levels are maintained • Ensure periodic and routine inspection and maintenance of equipment and resources • Carry out risk assessments for all science practicals and share these with teachers• Prepare and disseminate work set for classes due to teacher absence • Ensure adherence to health and safety procedures

• Conduct individual and collaborative research projects contributing substantially to the development of new techniques, ideas, approaches and findings• Lead in the implementation and execution of a main project, including developing research objectives and proposals• Maintain a written record of all research activities including experimental design, results, discussions and meetings• Write-up results of research and contribute to publishing of results in high-quality peer-reviewed academic literature • Project management including work planning and meeting project milestones, participating in regular discussions with other academic partners, and adapting plans based on results• Disseminate results of projects during lab meetings, by presentations at conferences, and through publication• Participate regularly in group meetings and prepare and deliver presentations to internal and external stakeholders or funders• Assist with the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, and the assessment of student knowledge• Continually update knowledge and understanding in field to inform research • Identify sources of funding and provide assistance with preparing bids to funding bodies

• Develop an appropriate research plan to enable the submission of a thesis for examination within the 4-year funding period• Undertake pure and applied research at an advanced level, contributing substantially to the development of new techniques, ideas, approaches and findings• Report to the supervisory team at regular intervals and adapt the direction, scope and timescale of the research plan in response to feedback• Systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge at the forefront of the field • Maintain written record of all research activities including experimental design, results, discussions and meetings• Undertake appropriate skills and knowledge development training including international collaboration• Present thesis and submit to viva voce examination
