Biology Resource Center Tutor
The Biology Resource Center (BRC) is a free resource offered by the Purdue Biology Department to serve the academic needs of students taking Purdue biology courses. The BRC staffs about ten junior and senior level biology students as tutors. Being a BRC tutor has been a rewarding experience for me because I am able to help other students in their beginning level biology courses.
Undergraduate Researcher
I research in Hockmeyer Hall of Structural Biology in Discovery Park at Purdue under Dr. David Sanders. My first semester I worked on designing an animation of a microbial protein structure. The next five semesters I worked directly under a graduate student in the lab. I have learned and run many different procedures on my own including: gel electrophoresis, western blots, maxi preps, midi preps, preparing glycerol stock solutions, preparing agar plates, maintaining cell lines, splitting, transfecting and transducing cells, and preparing various types of solutions, media, and buffers. The amount of lab techniques and skills I have acquired in lab is large. However, this is one of my most meaningful experiences because not only have I learned new lab techniques but I have experienced the joy of learning, the thrill and excitement of scientific experiments and discoveries, the general research process, and how to problem solve in science. Being involved in my research lab really helped me to realize that I am interested in cellular and molecular biology. I found that I like to understand how things work on an atomic and molecular level first and then build up to how they work within bigger models. My research has greatly helped me to better understand my upper level cellular biology classes. It also helped me choose classes to take since I understood what I was most interested in and what I wanted to learn more about. Researching fueled my drive to learn more. If I did an experiment and my results didn't make sense I had to learn to analyze them and attempt to understand them and plan out future experiments. This type of hands on learning and problem solving is like nothing I have experienced before.
Emergency Department Liaison
As an Emergency Department Liaison I answered call lights and assisted patients by checking in on them throughout their stay in the ED. I specifically checked on patients who had been in the ED for around an hour or more and asked them how they were doing and if I could get them with anything. I also checked the tracking board and let the patients know what they were waiting on to help to ease their anxiety. I functioned as the liaison between patients and the MD or the RN if they had specific medical questions. I also kept lonely patients company and listened to them talk to help ease their stress.
Captain At Healthworks! Kids Museum
HealthWorks! Kids' Museum has a mission to teach children about their bodies in a fun interactive way and promote a healthy lifestyle. HealthWorks! is another way that Memorial Hospital is trying to improve the quality of life in the South Bend, IN community. At HealthWorks! I assisted children and families on the museum floor by explaining exhibits to them, presenting interactive healthy demonstrations, and simply playing and exercising with the kids. I often helped plan, organize, and present camps and field trips alongside the HealthWorks! educators. I also went to schools and day cares with the educators to do health presentations about puberty, healthy eating, exercise, hygiene, etc.
Research And Development Technician
While at PTS I planned, prepared, and conducted experiments. I also documented, analyzed, and presented my results. I presented my results to my research team, the head of R&D, and employees in different departments of the company. This was a great experience because I got to see what industry research is like, and I got to work with the R&D team as well as collaborate with other divisions of the company such as quality control.
