Navidence is a startup tech company that evolved from frustration with the laborious and time-consuming manual processes associated with ‘in-the-trenches’ real-world data (RWD) use to support Life Science clinical research. A major barrier for Life Science researchers is the development of definitions used to guide the assessment of real-world datasets as “fit-for-purpose” to answer a particular research question and the subsequent operational execution of that research. Currently, an entire team of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, data scientists, clinicians and others assemble for what is typically a weeks-to-months-long manual process developing value sets that characterize the patient of interest. Navidence’s concept library and cutting-edge data science create “computable phenotypes” derived from carefully curated clinical concepts that relate to the patient of interest. Navidence’s Sherpa™ platform delivers SaaS convenience to RWD research teams seeking to create reusable and updatable computable phenotypes that offers ready-to-deploy SQL queries for real-world dataset interrogation, qualification, and validation as fit for the research purpose.

• Managed multiple direct/matrixed product and service line teams (22 FTEs/$3.7 million) responsible for: delivering our next-generation platform’s data analyst/engineer tooling and processes, clinician-friendly ruleset GUI builder, dashboard reporting, Power BI/Tableau/Qlik server management, solution architecture, data quality assessment/monitoring and self-service analytics.• Established the first cross-organizational Solutions Architect team for Health Catalyst. The team identifies, documents, and addresses product, service and account management gaps particularly for our high-value/high-profile existing customers and future sales prospects. This is achieved with innovative applications of existing tools, developing new software/database solutions, researching white papers, onsite presentations to customers/sales prospects, etc. leading to both monetary and quality improvements valued at 10+ millions of dollars of account retention and expansion.• Mentored diverse groups of direct and indirect reports including software engineers, data architects, BI developers, product managers, and project managers.• Organized and presented regularly during onsite and virtual strategy presentations to international/domestic C-suite/executive leaders at all stages of the customer lifecycle. Scoped requirements, contract/SOW deliverables, costs/pricing, and timelines with internal/external executives, finance, and legal departments.• Spearheaded the initial development of a new Integration Architect professional services line to bridge identified gaps in product and customer capabilities. Health Catalyst has grown this to a $1.6+ million-dollar billable team after only two years.• Lead evaluation of new cloud-based solutions for professional services division including Databricks, Snowflake and DBT as part of next-generation platform development.

• Managed three software development and data architect teams responsible for building a next-generation clinical knowledge infrastructure including standardized FHIR-inspired data marts, a clinician-friendly ruleset GUI builder and overall clinical informatics infrastructure. Multiple years of double-digit user growth percentages achieved.• Successfully diversified and expanded product integration into multiple sales verticals spanning clinical analytics, care management, chart review, clinical research, life sciences, and pharmaceutical trial exploration resulting in millions in new sales/expansion opportunities.• Defined product development strategy and roadmaps for multiple product teams in coordination with other senior VPs and C-suite leadership. Defined the strategy for multiple cross-product reorganizations due to pre-IPO and post-IPO expansion needs including the formation of an independent Data Business Unit.

• Managed the Biomedical Informatics team (14 FTE) which is responsible for our Salesforce CRM and our bureau’s SQL Server clinical data warehouse which contains data transmissions from hundreds of clinical practices throughout NYC, medical claims, provider demographics, and research datasets covering over 4 million patient lives.• Awarded CMS/New York State IAPD funds ($1.5 million FFY14-15 & $1.5 million FFY15-16) to develop public health specialized registries for syndromic surveillance, case reporting and aggregate population health using New York City HIEs.• Oversaw the evaluation of 300,000 patient summaries (C32s) from the Healthix HIE to determine its utility for population health operations in preparation for a full population health registry implementation with 10 million patients in 2016.• Completed $8.9 million HEAL 17 grant as co-director with behavioral health colleagues.• Designed, built, and maintained a community-wide quality improvement system that deliveries regular clinical dashboard summaries to thousands of providers in hundreds of clinics throughout New York City. These reports assess providers’ progress compared to their peers for meaningful use, PCMH certification, value-based contracts, and quality improvement initiatives.• Designed and oversaw the i2b2 Query Health prototype built by NYeC to enable public health querying of de-identified data across New York City HIEs. Deployed 230 iPad kiosks with PHR portal access and health education content at 115 practices throughout NYC as part of our patient engagement program. Developed behavioral health EHR/PHR contract deliverables for HIE connectivity, electronic referrals, and system implementation.• National lead for the ONC S&I Framework’s Query Health Clinical Workgroup to build a national distributed query system standard to support population health analysis across multiple EHR/HIE vendor systems.

• Develop and research innovative healthcare IT solutions for deployment through multiple EHR/HIE software partners as part of the Primary Care Information Project (PCIP) development of a public health and prevention-oriented EHR solution used by outpatient clinicians throughout New York City.• Co-developed distributed analytics systems with multiple EHR vendors including eClinicalWorks, Greenway, and MDLand for evaluating population health. Built additional software/analytic tools and processes to generate queries, process results, and report to clinical/public health end users. Awarded Healthcare Informatics 1st place Innovator Award and featured in the February 2012 edition.• 2011 HIMSS Public Health Davies Award of Excellence organizational recipient for virtually integrated EHR practice data network for public health and clinical metric collection and process improvement.• Co-developed prototype (popCCR) Continuity of Care Record-based decision support standard for representing public health guidelines which merged with the ONC-sponsored popHealth system and implemented the first clinical trial pilot.• Built a disease surveillance module in eClinicalWorks EHR used by the NYCDOH to track outbreaks including the 2009 H1N1 Influenza Pandemic.• Led a development team to build a randomized controlled trial plug-in module within eClinicalWorks to enroll and track patients in a multi-center intervention study to improve hypertension tracking and control.• Led a development team to program the pay-for-performance metrics within eClinicalWorks to pay out ~$1.5 million dollars to providers in multiple NYCDOH quality improvement studies.• Informatics lead for New York State-funded collaboration to connect all NYC health information exchanges (RHIOs) to the eClinicalWorks EHR. Responsible for defining and harmonizing technical implementation details to enable health information exchange using industry standards including NHIN CONNECT.

• Worked within the Public Health Center of Excellence collaboration between DBMI, NYC Department of Health (DOH), and the Institute for Family Health• Submitted three grants as Primary Investigator to AHRQ, NIH, ONC and co-authored three grants for the CDC Center of Excellence in Public Health Informatics, New York State HEAL X and Cardizem settlement grant• Identified vital security enhancements for the eClinicalWorks EHR and coordinated their implementation between the senior management at the NYC DOH and eClinicalWorks• Analyzed the usage of the Epic EHR clinical decision support (CDSS) alerts at the Institute for Family Health• Research interests included health information exchange, integrating external medication histories (e.g. Medicaid, RxHub) into EHR medication lists, medication reconciliation, disease surveillance, CDSS alerts, HIT privacy/security, and small-practice EHR implementation• Taught lectures on clinical decision support to fourth year medical students at Columbia University as part of their Biomedical Informatics course.• Presented at HIMSS Academic Forum 2010 and presented joint research project on popCCR standard at the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase.• Paper Reviewer for AMIA 2010 Annual Conference and BMC Geriatrics• HIMSS 2012 Annual Conference Reviewer• Co-lead for Public Health IT curriculum for ONC-funded Health IT Workforce Development Program.
