Mick Phillips Work Experience Details
  • Bruker Cellular Analysis
    Staff Development Engineer
Bruker Cellular Analysis Feb 2020 - Present
    Emeryville, Ca, Us
Working between multidisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers and software developers to realise new applications of BLI's platforms, and ensuring their quality and timely delivery. I work directly with scientists, and also maintain processes, training materials, and documentation that enable them to produce structured, maintainable and testable code to drive complex instruments.
  • University Of Oxford
    Microscopy Systems Developer
University Of Oxford Jul 2013 - Feb 2020
    Oxford, Oxfordshire, Gb
    • Development of state of the art instrumentation for super-resolution (SR) imaging. I integrate commercial light sources, sensors, and photonic devices by using CAD to design optical systems, new mechanical parts & assemblies, and custom electronic devices, and write control software from low-level microcontroller code up to user interface.• I managed the Micron facility’s rapid prototyping tools, developing protocols for production of small parts with fine features, for creating annotated technical drawings and CAM files for manufacture of parts by conventional tools, and scripts to automate parts of this process.• Specification, configuration, installation and management of networks of conventional PCs and ARM-based single-board computers for distributed control of advanced imaging systems using Microsoft & Linux OSes. • Delivered a new SR system for imaging with concurrent electrophysiology. Responsible for design of the instrument, specification of facilities requirements, management & oversight of laboratory modifications to meet those requirements, production of health and safety documentation, and supervision of post-docs and post- grad students during system build, calibration and validation. • Improved 4π single molecule spectroscopy, including complete redrafting and tolerancing of 3rd prototype in Zemax and Autocad Inventor, and adapting and extending 3rd-party software in LabVIEW and Matlab. • Lead developer of two new open source packages for control of complex, bespoke microscopes , now adopted by several labs in UK, US and Europe. (Pure python, leveraging ctypes, numpy, Pyro4 and wxWidgets; cross- platform, developed and tested under Windows, MacOS & Linux). • Teaching as part of post-graduate advanced microscopy courses & advanced imaging seminars.
  • Micron Oxford Advanced Bioimaging Unit
    Microscopy Systems Developer
Micron Oxford Advanced Bioimaging Unit Jul 2013 - Feb 2020
    Oxford, Gb
  • Diamond Light Source
    Visiting Scientist
Diamond Light Source Aug 2013 - Aug 2019
    Didcot, Oxfordshire, Gb
    • Delivered a completely new Cryo-superresolution system in 2 years, usable with minimal training as part of a national facility for correlative X-ray/LM imaging. I designed & built the system, and managed capital proposal, project delivery, and budget.
  • Botley Bridges
    Director
    Botley Bridges Aug 2016 - May 2019
I was a founding director and a trustee of Botley Bridges, a registered charity that supports families in Botley and the surrounding area. I was responsible for submitting the initial company registration, charitable status registration, and subsequent filings and statements to Companies House and the Charity Commission.
  • Asylum Research, An Oxford Instruments Company
    Applications Scientist
Asylum Research, An Oxford Instruments Company May 2009 - Jun 2013
    Santa Barbara, Ca, Us
    • Sole technical representative in the UK, covering UK, Ireland, Scandinavia & Middle East, supporting technical sales through direct involvement in discussions with customers, matching customer needs to products, undertaking measurements and producing reports to demonstrate that products met those needs.• Teaching in seminars, workshops and one-to-one training for beginners, intermediate and expert users. • Responsible for delivery of products and product support to customers, troubleshooting technical problems and arranging (or undertaking) repair or replacement of failed components, and debugging and patching software issues. • Hardware and software product development in new application areas and novel advanced imaging modes. • Wrote software to enable customers to better exploit our instruments' capabilities: automated acquisition and analysis tasks, and added new control panels and underlying code to enable new techniques. • Improved company visibility through publication in peer-reviewed and industry journals, and production of instructional videos, across disciplines including nanoscience, low-dimensional materials, (nano)biomechanics, electrochemistry and nanotribology. • Sales support in Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong & China visiting customer sites and conferences. • Invoicing, stock management, import/export paperwork and IT management. I developed and introduced new systems for stock management, materials safety documentation and invoicing in the UK office.
  • National Physical Laboratory
    Visiting Scientist
National Physical Laboratory May 2009 - Apr 2011
    Teddington, Middlesex, Gb
I contributed to a number of research projects, particularly concerning standards for scanning probe microscopies, and chemoinformatics for mass spectroscopy.
  • National Physical Laboratory
    Senior Research Scientist
National Physical Laboratory Oct 2007 - May 2009
    Teddington, Middlesex, Gb
    • Formulation of new programmes to build NPL’s capacity and reputation for nanoanalysis. • Development of standards and applications for nanoanalytical techniques, principally scanning probe microscopies, mass spectrometry and X-ray spectroscopy methods as part of ISO /TC 201. • Chemoinformatics for mass spectroscopy: database backed modelling and analysis of fragmentation pathways, using python, django and MySQL. • Secured £1.3M for new research projects in nano- and surface analysis. • Became the lab’s first nanomaterials safety officer, liasing with the health and safety team to proactively manage risk in a new area. • Developed instrumentation and software to address measurement challenges.
  • University College Dublin
    Postdoctoral Fellow
University College Dublin Jan 2007 - Oct 2007
    Dublin, Dublin, Ie
    • Developed new measurement methods in atomic force microscopy, and collaborated with a leading manufacturer to commercialise them.• Carried out research to further understanding of microcantilever dynamics.
  • Trinity College Dublin
    Postdoctoral Fellow
Trinity College Dublin Aug 2004 - Dec 2006
    Dublin, Ie
    • Developed methods and tools for studying novel nanostructures.• Established protocols and controls for fabricating reliable contacts to nanoscale samples using e-beam lithography, physical vapour deposition, FIB milling and ion-beam assisted metal deposition.
