Dr. Mikael Olsson is a social scientist that for more than 20 years has worked extensively and in various capacities and environments with contemporary issues relating to the societal transformations in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Academic work in combination with various more specialised assignments has resulted in extensive and close international contacts within academia, administration, business and NGO’s. These networks have developed hand-in-hand with a growing and by now significant experience with educational design, building academic environments, organising public events, conferences and meetings. Core competencies include research, project leadership, strategic analysis and communication.Since 2007, when domiciled at the island of Gotland, he has worked as an analyst with the Sida (and as of 2012 the Swedish Institute) Baltic Sea Unit, primarily with a government commissioned project to intensify learning in the EU territorial cooperation programmes in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) and issues relating to the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR). As of 2013 he has also been project leader for a EUSBSR Flagship Project, Balticlab (balticlab-online.eu) and also works with other educational programme initiatives. Concurrently he has since 2010 worked as project leader for a research project on the role of FDI and trade in the integration of the BSR; and in late 2012-early 2013 he was a visiting researcher at Gotland University/Uppsala University, Campus Gotland.His doctoral dissertation was defended at Uppsala University in late 1999. Over the years he has held positions with the Dept. of East European Studies, Uppsala University, the Stockholm Institute for Transition Economics (SITE), Stockholm School of Economics, the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES), the National Institute for Working Life, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Swedish Institute.
