As principal, my primary role was leader of educational change and innovation. I led the transformation of a large comprehensive high school from one employing traditional practices to one recognized as a global role model for academic excellence and innovation. Hope for the future of education is possible through purposeful, intentional, and genuine dialogue, led and facilitated by experienced forward-thinking practitioners. Specific examples:*BRANDING OUR PRODUCT: We defined and promoted BGHS’s vision, mission, ideals/beliefs, exit outcomes, and motto.*STANDARDS-BASED GRADING: We transformed our grading from a system of numbers and symbols to a clear description of proficiency.*SENIOR INSTITUTE: We required every graduating senior student to present evidence of accomplishment via a yearlong capstone project, culminating with an exhibition and requirement that the student create a product and defend his or her work against exit outcomes.*COLLABORATIVE STRUCTURES: We moved from isolation to collaboration. We built in faculty empowerment coupled with clear, precise agreed-upon processes for alignment and consistency yielding genuine, authentic responsibility.*INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE: In the course of five years, we embedded whole-school Middle Years Program and Diploma Program. *RESTRUCTURED SCHOOL DAY: We incorporated student advisory and collaborative practices for staff.

I approached being assistant principal as the first lieutenant to the principal. I looked at my work as contributing to the principal’s success in carrying out our school’s mission by ensuring that policy, procedures, and practices were implemented throughout the school. Due to that commitment to my supporting role, I was recognized as someone who understood levels of leadership. It also allowed me to hone my own leadership style and vision for the school which I now employ as principal.- Oversaw curriculum, instruction, and assessment- Designed and deployed standards-based grading during four-year process - Examined and designed Title I extended-learning options for student remediation and acceleration/advancement

I directed all facets of a comprehensive instrumental music program including concert band, wind ensemble, marching band, music theory, music theatre, and jazz band.Under my direction, the BGHS jazz emsemble was recognized throughout the western United States as one of the top performing ensembles. The group consistently earned ratings of superior with distinction as well as winning the prestigious Fullerton College Jazz Competition in Los Angeles, California. We also performed many professional-level engagements, including events at Disneyland, Disney World, and EPCOT in Florida.

Using the work of “Good to Great” author Jim Collins as a foundation for what makes some low economic and students of minority races successful, we used its six principles to ensure high levels of student achievement.I met with Principal partners in the Beat the Odds cohort to help them develop action plans using the six principles of highly effective leaders. The work we did fostering school leadership and employing strategies for academic success produced "Gold Level" schools through the Beat the Odds program.
