About Walter J. Matweychuk, Ph.D.

Dr. Walter Matweychuk earned his Ph.D. in school and clinical psychology from Hofstra University in 1990. He holds a B.A. and an M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania. He was trained in the use of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy by completing an internship and fellowship training program with Dr. Albert Ellis, the founder of Rational-Emotive-Behavior Therapy in New York City. As an undergraduate and master's student at the University of Pennsylvania, he was initially exposed to cognitive behavior therapy while working at the Center for Cognitive Therapy, which was directed by Dr. Aaron T. Beck. Dr. Beck is the founder of Beck's Cognitive Therapy. Dr. Matweychuk’s clinical approach is strongly influenced by both Dr. Albert Ellis and Dr. Aaron T. Beck. Dr. Matweychuk co-authored Overcoming Your Addictions, Sheldon Press 2000 together with Dr. Windy Dryden.Dr. Matweychuk is a practicing psychologist for the University of Pennsylvania Health System in the outpatient psychiatry department. Dr. Matweychuk formerly served on a research team at the University of Pennsylvania led by Dr. Aaron Beck and Dr. Gregory K. Brown. He has an independent practice in Rittenhouse Square in downtown Philadelphia.
