Profile bio

About Muhammad Ali, Ph.D.

I’ve had the opportunity to build a career that’s all about adaptability and quick learning. My journey across different countries and fields—starting with engineering and moving into materials science and electro-optics—has taught me how to embrace new challenges and thrive in dynamic environments. I love being able to pivot, take on new roles, and quickly get up to speed, whether I’m solving technical problems or working with a team to get things done. One thing I’ve learned along the way is how to combine knowledge from different areas and put it to use in real-world applications. Whether I’m designing numerical simulations, working hands-on with optical systems, or leading cross-functional teams, I approach problems from a broad perspective, and that helps me find effective solutions. Alongside that, my experience in both academia and industry has also given me solid communication skills—from publishing papers and presenting at conferences, to working closely with teams from different backgrounds to bring big ideas to life.I come from an engineering background, but I’m really passionate about materials science characterization and exploring the space between theory and application. My work so far has focused on liquid crystals, optical technology, and thin films, but what really drives me is the desire to keep learning and innovating. I get excited by new technologies and projects that push the limits of what we can achieve.Right now, I’m especially interested in roles where I can dive deeper into research or R&D environments, developing innovative materials and optical technologies. I’m confident that my analytical skills, engineering mindset, and ability to lead cross-functional teams make me a great fit for scientific research and technology development roles.

Product Development Engineer

Current

Veldhoven, North Brabant, Netherlands

I am a part of the technology development team focused on liquid crystals-based smart windows designed for solar shading and privacy applications. My role primarily revolves around leading R&D initiatives to advance thin liquid crystal film’s electro-optics for smart windows and directing efforts towards refining processes and enhancing product quality. This encompasses the creation of computational tools and conducting numerical (optical) simulations, followed by a thorough validation process through practical experiments. Validating which includes precise thin film characterizations down to the pixel level through rigorous experimentation using various optical measurement systems. In addition to my core responsibilities, I collaborate closely with various teams, including electronics, software, and engineering, to ensure seamless integration of the product and meet high-quality standards. This experience allows me to develop expertise in problem-solving, cross-functional teamwork, and the development of innovative solutions in a dynamic environment. The technical expertise required for this job includes the electro-optics of anisotropic thin films and ways to achieve uniformity of such films down to pixel level.

Dec 2022 - Present

Postdoctoral Researcher

Wako, Saitama, Japan

Laboratory: Physicochemical Soft Matter ResearchCharacterization of modulated nematic phases (twist-bend and splay bend nematic) and ferroelectric nematic phase.I worked on the in-plane switching of the twist-bend nematic phase, so that the phase transition from twist-bend to splay-bend phase can be achieved. Such phases can be used in integrated optics. Moreover, I worked on the thermal anisotropic properties of twist-bend and ferroelectric nematic phases. This could help in better understanding of such exotic phases. As ferroelectric has a great potential to revive the liquid crystal display technology and as well as a great prospect for electro-optic, electro-mechanical applications.

Apr 2022 - Nov 2022

Ph.D. Student

Warsaw, Masovian District, Poland

Faculty of ChemistryProject: Chiral structures by achiral molecular building blocksI worked on the electro-optical properties of soft condensed matter (Liquid crystals). Liquid crystals are best known for their application as displays (LCD: liquid crystal display). These liquid crystals can change their properties depending on factors like temperature and pressure. In my research work, I focused on a specific type of liquid crystal called bent-core liquid crystals. These materials can naturally form periodic patterns without any surface engineering, making them useful for creating diffraction gratings that can be used in beam steering devices and integrated photonics. This project was done in collaboration with the University of Maribor in Slovenia, where I did mathematical modeling, and the University of Warsaw in Poland, where I conducted experiments.Throughout my research, I worked closely with various teams, both within and outside my organization. I also had the opportunity to work on a related project involving Langmuir-Blodgett films at the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, within their soft condensed matter group.
