Are You Dense, Inc. began in 2008 to raise awareness of dense breast tissue for the Early Detection of Breast Cancer. It was born out of her tragedy of an advanced stage cancer diagnosis in 2004, after a decade of "normal" mammograms.Are You Dense Advocacy, Inc. was formed in 2011 as the legislative affiliate to Are You Dense, Inc. Its mission is to give women with dense breast tissue access to Early Detection through legislative action. Dr. Cappello is a sought after speaker at events throughout the country and has lectured in Puerto Rico, Canada & Italy about her story of inspiration and legislative accomplishments and how she took her personal tragedy and transformed it into a powerful force.

Responsibilities of this position included monitoring and providing technical assistance to district personnel as a result of the district's status under the No Child Left Behind Act, conducting assessments of school and district practices, implementing CT’s accountability legislation as Team Leader in two urban school districts, facilitating the development of district improvement plans, facilitating school improvement and accountability team meetings with district staff, leading the state’s Response to Intervention (RtI) efforts, developing the state’s Basic and Certification training module for its RTI framework, providing statewide training of the modules, conducting due process mediations, overseeing the academic accomplishment workgroup of the State’s Performance Plan (SPP), leading the state’s efforts in monitoring the performance of students with disabilities on state-wide assessments and reducing the disproportionate representation by race and ethnicity of students identified as disabled.

Responsibilities of this position included providing guidance and leadership concerning the education of students with disabilities to a wide spectrum of stakeholders in Connecticut, ensuring compliance with federal and state requirements, ensuring that an effective system of due process is operational, overseeing the development of new and, as needed, revision of existing publications, maintaining a monthly bureau blog on the department’s website as a mechanism of communication to a wide audience, ensuring that professional development and technical assistance are provided to all relevant stakeholders, ensuring that approved private special education programs are operating in compliance with federal and state requirements, providing expert knowledge and leadership in ensuring that students with disabilities receive a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment, ensuring that the Surrogate Parent Appointment System operates consistent with federal and state requirements, supervising a staff of twenty-four and representing the State Department of Education at national meetings and conferences. Under my leadership, Connecticut was one of 9 states that met the federal requirements of its State Performance Plan (SPP).
