Profile bio

About Natasha Gutierrez, Ph.D.

I am a former research scientist who became a high school science educator to increase women and students of color into S.T.E.M careers. Below is my philosophy on how I approach my role as an educator and educational leader.“The paradox of education is precisely this - that as one begins to become conscious one beginsto examine the society in which he is being educated.” ~James A. BaldwinThe above quote is from James A. Baldwin’s 1963 speech (later to be an essay), “A Talk to Teachers,” where he presents that as someone becomes more educated, they will be thinking critically about the society in which they occupy. His speech reveals that the injustices communities of color were subjected to and the difficulty of reaching equality were a result of society’s oppression on education. From this speech, especially the quote by James A. Baldwin, I have used as a guide for my own pedagogy in wanting to develop and foster a student’s individuality and consciousness of their place in this society. As a science educator and educational leader, I strive to create an inclusive and equitable teaching environment that fosters a social-justice mindset in my students, connected to the way we experience and practice science. This is turn will cultivate critical thinking skills and motivation that will enhance science-literacy, be empowered to pursue STEM careers, and become advocates in our own communities. As an educational leader, it is important to guide and coach educators to find ways to build relationships with students through reality pedagogy. Connection to curriculum, foundations of relationships, and supports are a recipe for success, in my option, as well as equity in education, especially in S.T.E.M fields.

Listed skills include Microsoft Office, Electron Microscopy, Fluorescence Microscopy, Science, and 19 others.
