As a PhD candidate at KU Leuven, I collaborated with Vrije Universiteit Brussel in a national project funded by FWO (Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) project no. G.0C38.15N, entitled "AE-FracMasS: advanced Acoustic Emission analysis for Fracture mode identification in Masonry Structures". In the framework of my doctoral research, the following objectives have been accomplished: 1. State of the art on masonry failure characterization with Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques2. Techniques for AE-based failure mode characterization3. Techniques for modeling of masonry failure mechanisms4. Evaluation of AE source location algorithms for increased source location accuracy5. Micro-modeling of mechanical behavior of masonry, based on constituent’s properties6. Calibration of numerical models with X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) 7. Full-field strain mapping with digital image correlation techniques and combined with AE results for validation purposes8. Experimental testing on large-scale masonry specimens9. Validation of AE localization and AE-based fracture mode characterization 10. Validation of mechanical behavior and FEM-based fracture mode characterization 11. I was pleased to collaborate in the numerical analysis of masonry structures with the research group led by Prof. Pere Roca Fabregat at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. I was awarded FWO long stay research grant for this stay. As a visiting researcher at UPC, the following objectives have been accomplished: 1. Study of the state of the art on micro-modeling and macro-modeling techniques for masonry. 2. Knowledge on the use of computational tools for masonry modeling (software: DIANA). 3. Development of numerical models in plane stress, plane strain and three-dimension. 4. Calibration of numerical models by using the mechanical properties obtained from the experimental tests at KU Leuven. 5. Validation of numerical models by comparison of reference results. 6. Analysis of models representing experimental specimens and comparison with experimental results.7. Sensitivity analysis of selected parameters and their effects on the failure mode. 8. Final conclusions on the accuracy of the model.
