My consultancy work covered a range of technical areas: Data and uncertainty analysis. This included: analysing BNFL data to determine appropriate values for rock and chemical properties in modelling groundwater transport; analysing air monitoring data to investigate the distribution of NO2 near to roads; studies into the management of uncertainty for radioactive waste disposal and for atmospheric dispersion. Computer code production, documentation and verification. Examples of codes work that I was involved with include: developing an integrated environmental model including atmospheric dispersion, surface water transport and estuarine process; writing a model to predict the likely atmospheric deposition following a factory fire; production of a network code for modelling underground flow and transport of contaminants; developing and coding a mathematical model of the interaction between sea surface waves and internal waves; developing and coding a mathematical model of microbial growth and gas production in a landfill site. Scientific and Technical Reviews. I was Technical Auditor of the BNFL Drigg 2002 Post Closure Safety Case, which involved ongoing work within the project culminating in the review of 20 major reports and a selection of more detailed technical notes. I also wrote reviews on a range of scientific studies, including: the variation of road side pollution with height; the effect of snow on atmospheric deposition of radionuclides; the effect of possible future climate change on the biosphere transport of radionuclides. Website development. I developed websites for government departments, including for the DTI Beacon Projects, the DTI Applied Genomics LINK programme and the Microbial Safety of Food Funders Group database for the Food Standards Agency.

To develop and apply strategies to rejuvenate chess in English secondary schools.

Mainly teaching A level Maths and Further Maths, with some KS4 classes. Also lots of extension and extra-curricula maths activities including preparing pupils for the Cambridge STEP exam. Mathematical modelling of environmental processes

Boeing Computer Services sold computer time on its CRAY in Seattle to British industry needing supercomputing power. I provided technical support to NNC (our major customer) including: close liaison with users and NNC's computer department; location and resolution of IT problems; presenting training courses; developing and implementing improvements to our service. I was also manager of the Warrington Office.

My work involved developing and running computer models of the ocean circulation, analysing model results, writing and presenting papers, collaborating with researchers within the institute, advising research students, reviewing journal papers and organising the 1987 NERC 'Ocean Modelling’ conference, lecturing to and tutoring physics undergraduates. I was also involved in statistical analysis of the Meteorological Office Ocean Data archive, investigating trends in the Pacific Ocean surface wind data over the last 65 years. Whilst at Oxford I taught the 3rd year undergraduate Geophysics course.
