My research involves understanding how brain injury arises from complications during pregnancy and at the time of birth to establish treatment strategies to reduce the overall burden of brain injury. I aim to conduct preclinical research with high scientific rigour to ensure the safe translation to human newborns. I received my PhD in fetal physiology and neurodevelopment investigating the use of creatine, a dietary supplement, to protect the fetus/newborn from oxygen deprivation related brain injury. I am now a post-doctoral researcher investigating the neurological mechanisms underlying respiratory failure at birth. I have an expertise in large animal modelling of fetal and newborn compromise simulating in utero, labour and newborn complications. I have extensive training in sterile animal surgery, perinatal physiology, molecular and protein analysis and cell culture.
