Nirmal is an Otolaryngology/ Head & Neck Surgeon who completed Otolaryngology training in the NSW Rotation of Australian training scheme. He then completed two USA based Fellowships in Ear and Lateral Skull Base Surgery over a period of 3 years. The first, a research Fellowship under the tutelage of Professor Anil Lalwani at New York University; the second a clinical Fellowship under the mentorship of Professor Clough Shelton (current President of the American Neurotology Society) at the University of Utah. Nirmal runs a public and private clinical practice specialising in Ear/ Lateral Skull Base Surgery and Children's ENT surgery. Research is an important part of his practice, with interests including Micro Computerised Tomography of the Temporal Bone, Cochlear Implants, Additive Manufacturing in Otology and Biofilms/ Mucosal disease of the Middle Ear.Aboriginal Ear Health is also a part of Nirmal's medical activities. He is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Indigenous Health Committee and has established an outreach clinic in Griffith, NSW Australia.Nirmal was Australia's first elected member of the International Working Group on Endoscopic Ear Surgery dedicated to excellence in advancing this new technique of minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery. He is a founding member of the Sydney Endoscopic Ear Surgery Research Group which along with the Universtiy of Verona, runs the world's first Endoscopic Ear Surgery Fellowship.
