Project Trainee
In an assembly plant, Line Feeders manually inspect the availability of raw material in every workstation and transport the required materials from the logistics department with the help of trolleys. Since this process involves only manual inspection, the assembly process gets halted until the raw materials reach the workstation, and the lead time is increased. In this project an attempt has been made to improve the logistics performance by interfacing the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) techniques with the assembly line in a cellular manufacturing system. The RFID techniques provide details to the logistics department about the assembly line materials movement and availability of materials in each workstation in which the RFID Reader and Transmitter reads the information in the RFID tag and transmits the information to Receiver. Based on this feedback the logistics department transports the raw materials to the respective workstation with help of the line feeders. The line suppliers then release the raw materials with the help of respective trolleys. This eliminates the need for manual inspection and reduces the man power required for inspection of assembly line. Also the 5S concept is implemented in logistics department and its effects in reducing the loading time is illustrated. The aspects of 5S namely sorting the trolleys, setting them in order according to the workstations and in proper gangway, systematic cleaning of the logistic department, standardizing the procedures with the help of sign boards, and sustaining the discipline. A comparison of various evaluating parameters before and after the implementation of 5S is described with the help of using a 5S audit sheet to highlight the benefits of 5S implementation.
