About Roger Tan (郑 光 明)

An active legal practitioner since 1989, Notary Public since 2002 and a Commissioner for Oaths since 1997.Graduated from Queen Mary College, London University. Called to the Bar of England & Wales as barrister-at-law from Gray’s Inn, London in 1988. Admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore and High Court of Malaya in 1989. Also obtained Master of Laws from the National University of Singapore.Sat in the legislative drafting committees of Johor State Government and the Federal Ministries of Housing and Local Government and Energy, Green Technology and Water with regard to state and federal laws relating to water, solid waste management and housing development matters. Appointed by the two aforesaid Ministers as a Board Member of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation of Malaysia or SWCorp Malaysia (2009-2015) and Commissioner of the National Water Services Commission of Malaysia (2009-2017) respectively.An elected member (2004-2009 and 2017-2023) of the Bar Council of Malaysia - the governing body of the Malaysian Bar - and had chaired various committees, notably the Conveyancing Practice Committee and the 14th (2007) Malaysian Law Conference. Was also a Board Member of the Advocates & Solicitors Disciplinary Board (2013-2015 & 2017-2019).In 2008, appointed by the International Bar Association as part of an international team to evaluate the state of judiciary and the rule of law in Fiji. On 10 July 2019, appointed by the Minister of Home Affairs as a Special Task Force Member to probe the disappearances of Pastor Raymond Koh and social activist Amri Che Mat.Since 2009, has been the Malaysian Bar’s head of evaluation team appointed by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board to evaluate law degrees offered by local universities, including UUM, MMU, UNISZA, USIM and University of Reading Malaysia. Had also served as a president of the Strata Management Tribunal from July 2015 to June 2022.Currently, a trustee of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TARUMT), a Commissioner of the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom), a member Panel of Experts of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and Life Fellow of Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia. Writes regularly in local and foreign legal periodicals and news media and has a column with 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 entitled 'With All Due Respect'.Conferred the award of Panglima Jasa Negara (Commander of the Order of Meritorious Service) by His Majesty SPB Yang di-Pertuan Agong XIV (HM The King) which carries the title "Datuk".
