This role requires management of a technical operations group with focus on the DER.OS software platform and associated hardware (battery energy storage systems (BESS), fuel cells, renewables) to meet the business goals of Enel X. The DER.OS solution seamlessly integrates with a building’s electric infrastructure, renewable energy systems, building management systems, and other energy control devices to maximize savings and create other benefits. Opportunities that DER.OS harnesses include peak shaving, critical load support and backup, energy arbitrage and microgrids.To maximize savings for customers this role depended on my customer engagement skills, rates and utility program knowledge, awareness of technology in this market space and implementing standard operational procedures (and associated automation and tools for scaling).Creating tool, process and documentation strategies are a key part of this role as the group migrates from a start-up environment to integrating into a large corporation with support from numerous other groups. Regulatory, customer (human component) and general utility considerations were all key in creating a solution that was practical and effective.Project plan was approved, funded and implementation commenced.

Product management focused on Smart Grid Analytics, for both both domestic US and international markets.This role leveraged a unique and wide range of skills, knowledge and experience. - Experience with data available in advanced electric meters and gas meters, in addition to detailed knowledge of their operation, - From experience in engineering, development of different radio reading systems and devices, and general systems engineering involvement, my knowledge of communications networks, their realities and limitations ensured that the network was not being overloaded with superfluous data.- Experience with MDM data, schedules, typical billing data (and the gaps that exist between billing data and additional data leveraged in a range of SmartGrid analytical applications), the API's available, and database organisation, gave me detailed understanding of data types and availability, and enabled me to match this data with customer use cases.- For data not typically used in billing, knowledge of the API's throughout the system that would enable the collection of data via other means.- power electrical engineering knowledge and extensive customer experience bridging the gap between the data available and the use cases customers raised (both prior to and during this role).Consequently, some of my responsibilities and functions performed included:- API integration and alignment for data collection- work at customer sites around the world - technical power engineering calculations and verification of results- presentations to both managerial and technical customer audiences - domestically and internationally - on the operation and day to day benefits of the SmartGrid Analytics system from Itron.- Work with services groups overseeing the implementation at various sites. One of the major achievements was my overseeing and guiding the quickest implementations of a system since it had been created - up and operational within 3 days in the middle east.

The organisation was working to create international AMI systems leveraging the US-focused OpenWay system. Knowledge of meters, systems operation, communications networks utilised and international business acumen resulted in my selection for this role.Technical meetings were held with meter vendors looking for opportunities to integrate OpenWay with other meters, to leverage their market presence the AsiaPac region. Customer meetings were held to present the merits of the OpenWay system over competitor offerings, and highlight how our solution would meet international (non-US) requirements and address specific use-cases customers raised.A very small team and limited support in this project meant that I had to represent the company in both an extremely technical and also customer-focused capacity.

Engineering manager for a group developing radio collection systems for the Smart Grid market space - namely in the Itron OpenWay system. This role involved management of a group of between 7-12 engineers, extensive systems work, working directly with metering groups and their products, interaction and focus with wireless carriers and their technologies (3G, 4G, LTE), investigating options within the wireless industry as options for links in our systems, and pushing adherence to good engineering design processes and making it as easy as possible for customers to adopt and use our products.

Focused on RF low level design of data collectors / readers for the metering industry. This included work with hardware, firmware and software disciplines. Systems work and a significant amount of customer-focused work throughout the world made this a very rounded and enjoyable role. Lived in France and the US during this role, and worked with customers in the Asia-Pac, North American, Middle East and European markets.

RF design with focus on integration with biomedical equipment, this role involved taking existing US radio communications devices (including pager and cellular technology) and integrating them into biomedical equipment in order to facilitate in-home medical monitoring. This was seen as a critical feature for the company as it attempted to alleviate the need for patients to visit sleep clinics.The strict rules of the FDA for foreign biomedical products, US radio systems and standards, and general work in the biomedical industry made this a challenging but rewarding project, where I gained a lot of professional experience in a short period of time.This was a fixed term consulting role, and the term of the contract and successful completion of my work resulted in the finishing of the role.

Design of RF and low frequency analogue circuitry, and digital support circuitry. Responsibilities included both engineering development, test and project management. Systems and technologies included CDMA, APCO25 telecommunications networks.
