I am a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington's School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Global Health and the iSchool. I specialize in development, testing, and implementation of technology-based approaches in the study, assessment, and treatment of mental illness. At UW I serve as the Director of the Behavioral Research in Technology and Engineering (BRiTE) Center (www.brite.uw.edu) and Director of the mHealth for Mental Health Program (www.mh4mh.org). I provide digital health strategy consultation to early stage and established startups, as well as several Fortune 500 Companies.I have extensive experience designing and leading both academic and industry-based digital mental health initiatives in a variety of settings (e.g., community, psychiatric inpatient units, outpatient clinics) and countries. Since 2016, I have served as the inaugural editor of the Technology in Mental Health Column in Psychiatric Services- the American Psychiatric Association's flagship mental health services and policy journal. My research has been supported by grants and awards from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, SYNERGY Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Myrtlewood Foundation, and John Sloan Dickey Center. My work has been covered by the New York Times, NPR, Slate, Wired Magazine, the Economist, and the Washington Post. I am a regular speaker at national and international scientific meetings including invited presentations at the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Academy of Sciences, and the White House.
