I am the CEO and Founder of Strategic Biofuels, a project development company in the Carbon Capture and Sequestration and renewable fuels production industry. I graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and received a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. I conducted graduate level business courses at San Jose State University. I have over 35 years of experience in development and commercialization of innovative technologies in the petrochemical and natural gas and renewables industries. Prior to founding Strategic Biofuels I was Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director for Velocys, a publicly traded company on the London AIM exchange. In this capacity I was responsible for the development of projects and deployment of Velocys’ Fischer-Tropsch technology for converting biomass, waste, landfill gas, and natural gas to renewable diesel, jet fuel, and wax products. Additionally, I was responsible for all engineering, reactor and catalyst manufacturing, HSE, and R&D. This resulted in the successful commercial scale demonstration of the technology in partnership with Waste Management and NRG in Envia Energy LLC’s landfill gas to renewable diesel and wax plant on Waste Management’s Oklahoma City, OK landfill. I previously served as Global Sales Manager for Asset Integrity Management (AIM) for SGS and Director of Operations for AIM in North America. Before that I served as VP of R&D with Syntroleum and increasing levels of technology development and management with Catalytica, Phillips Petroleum, and Engelhard Corporation where he was responsible for commercialization of multiple products in the process and regulatory compliance industries. I have overseen projects and teams including the UK, Russia, Brazil, Japan, and Central America. I am an inventor on 15 US patents and an author of over 40 publications. These publications cover a broad range of topics including Asset Integrity Management, synthetic fuels, emissions monitoring, and catalysis.

Director Of Operations/Global Sales Director Asset Integrity Management/ContractorSgs/Fts Inspection And Engineering 2006 - 2011Directed Operations, Engineering, Technical Services, Software Development, QA/QC, HR, HSE, and IT.Corrected major dysfunctions in meeting client needs for processing and communicating inspection data to demonstrate compliance with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) regulations for 8 geographic regions of BP North American Gas (BP NAG) covering inspection of over 13,000 well sites and 100 gas plants. As a result, restructured the entire work process producing a 45% improvement in efficiency and an 77% reduction in re-work in a single year. These operational improvements ultimately led to the acquisition of FTS by SGS, the world’s largest testing, inspection, and verification company.Developed an innovative program with the local community college to provide training in critical skills to increase the pool of qualified job applicants. This allowed rapid expansion from 60 analysts to 200 analysts. Conceived and executed development of an expert system creating both standardized risk ranking and remediation recommendations for inspection findings. Reorganized the Asset Integrity Management sales and marketing organization to focus on new client development to address over-dependence on BP. Recruited and trained new sales staff. Selected and implemented Customer Relationship-Management software (Salesforce.com). As a result, new client sales increased from a $2 million base to $13 million in first 12 months.

Vice President Of Research And DevelopmentSyntroleum Corporation 1998 - 2003Managed $15 million annual R&D budget to convert natural gas, coal, or animal fats to fuels and lubricants. Headed development and integration of three technologies: autothermal reforming; Fischer-Tropsch synthesis; and hydrocracking. The hydrocracking technology was later commercialized to convert animal fats to renewable diesel fuel at the Dynamic Fuels plant in Geismar, LA. Established a rigorous development review process for new and existing projects. Integrated the Business Development and Finance groups into the review process to ensure clear commercial success criteria, well defined budgets, and realistic schedules. Terminated over 30% of existing projects because they did not meet the needed criteria. Revised remaining programs to better meet corporate objectives. Achieved $4 million savings the first year while simultaneously accelerating critical projects.Created an innovative strategy that overcame an existential threat from one of the largest multinational corporations that claimed ownership of all intellectual property in a field critical to Syntroleum. Implementing the strategy resulted in the multinational corporation ceasing such claims. Directed EPA emissions testing of renewable diesel fuel in a program funded by Chrysler Motors. Demonstrated substantially lower emissions and established the viability of this class of fuels to meet performance requirements for Europe, US, and California. Vice President Of Operations / Vice President Of Technology,Catalytica / Monitor Labs 1990 - 1998Turned around Catalytica’s quality plagued OEM sensor manufacturing business (Advanced Sensor Devices) by implementing a total quality management program resulting in 95% reduction of product returns from customers, 90% reduction in re-work, and 30% reduction in total manufacturing costs.Re-invigorated a program to develop a compact stack gas pollution monitoring instrument that could operate outdoors instead of in a laboratory environment. Rebooted the project and secured $4 million in funding from the Gas Research Institute (GRI). Established clear success criteria, restructured the team, developed the supply chain, and delivered the instrument on time and on budget. Advised on the selection of qualified manufacturers reps to distribute the pollution monitor. Led training of manufacturers rep network and provided technical sales support. The successful commercial deployment of the air pollution monitor resulted in the acquisition of Catalytica’s Advanced Sensor Devices business by Monitor Labs in 1996.Managed joint development program for conversion of natural gas to liquid hydrocarbon products with multinational consortium including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Stat Oil, PetroCanada, and Koch Industries.Lead process development for recycling waste hydrobromic acid used in fine chemicals manufacturing to bromine.

Sr. Research ChemistPhillips Petroelum (Now Phillips 66) 1987 - 1990Brought in to overcome the company’s past failures to transfer catalyst products developed in the laboratories to toll manufacturers. Established the requirements prior to technology transfer: 1) reformulate the products for ease of manufacturing and cost effectiveness; 2) identify the critical variables in the manufacturing process and put them under statistical process control; and 3) develop a robust QA/QC process. Successfully transferred the catalyst manufacturing for the STAR process® to United Catalyst (now Clariant AG) for toll manufacturing. The STAR process® remains in use in the chemical process industry. Developed effective manufacturing processes for regenerable sulfur absorbents (Z-Sorb), arsenic scavengers, dehydrogenation catalysts, and polymerization catalysts.
