I’m your gut. Your gastro-intestinal tract. Your tummy. I have many names. You probably don’t understand what I do, my parts, and why you need me. You probably don’t understand why I get unhappy or how to make me happy. I just feel so misunderstood.I’m a long tube–24 to 30 feet long–inside your body. My job is to take everything that you put in your mouth, process it, get the nutrients out of it that your body needs, and dispose of what it doesn’t need or what would be harmful.I start with your mouth and continue through your esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum. All of those are part of me-your GI tract. Each part has its own job. And, each part has to work with the others. Things can go wrong in one part that makes the other parts not work well, and you end up not feeling well. When I don’t work well, you don’t feel good. You don’t know how to fix me. You try different foods. You take different things. They may work, or only work for a bit, or they may not work at all. You see doctors who don’t help either. You get angry, sad, frustrated when I don’t work well. Your family and friends don’t understand either. You don’t have anyone you can talk to about how to fix me. We both want the same thing–for me to work well so you can feel great.That’s why we need to find someone who can help us feel better. We need to talk to Penny Wilson, she is a PhD and a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. She also struggled with her own gut. She suffered from many GI issues, and went to many doctors who told her “There’s nothing wrong.” Or, “It’s all in your head.” She was so frustrated she took matters into her own hands, put her research cap on, and didn’t give up until she understood her gut issues. Then she got them fixed. Now she is known as the GI Detective.
