    Our research goal is generating a tissue engineered (TE) source of urethral tissue for use in urethral reconstruction. Ideally, a TE urethra mimics the native urethra, consists of multiple cell layers of different origin, protects the underlying tissue as an efficient barrier from urine, is vascularized and resistant to mechanical forces during surgery. As in many patients undergoing urethral reconstruction surgery, the surrounding corpus spongiosum is either absent (in hypospadia patients) or affected by fibrosis, we aim to integrate the corpus spongiosum in our TE graft, providing the natural vascular environment.

    I work in the group Molecular Cancer Research, at the subdivision Chromatin and Transcription (http://groups.mcr.umcutrecht.nl/timmers/). Beside the genome wide studies in this group and the expertise in molecular biology and biochemistry, I add the cell biology to the transcription field. I started off with studying the dynamics of transcription using advanced live cell imaging techniques like fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP). Later the role of histone modifications in transcription regulation became the aim of my study. My latest project is performing an siRNA screen, where cell biology is combined with high throughput screening, robotics and automated microscopy. At this moment the procedure is completely automated, including the data analysis.Within this project I manage a small team of a PhD student, a technician and several undergraduate students.
