Phil invented algorithms in Matlab to process hundreds of terabytes of data using DSP, statistical and mathematical techniques. These were then implemented in Java software using Agile and TDD development methodologies. He focused on developing value, for both the business and the client.For example, a £250k R&D project now provides real time speed, congestion and incident data on motorways in Wales, England and New Zealand. This was delivered four weeks earlier than expected and his cost savings enabled a greater emphasis on the software development.During a six-month secondment to Cambridge, Boston, USA, Phil lead a focused team to detect rock falls on train lines. This £125k project automatically classified its acoustic signature. He developed algorithms and analysed data in Matlab and then converted into Java for productisation. He designed and directed trials to establish performance. The rock fall product has now been sold to five major railway companies. He also developed a gunshot localisation system, which has been sold to danger zones and high security assets.Further achievements/successful projects:Multiphase leak detection for Shell; received further funding.Own and co-authored several patents: Leak detection, gunshot, pigging.Numerous worldwide installations and technical meetingsValue-added improvements to core algorithms, including “hot-tapping” and detector optimisation.Presented to and taught customers and staff. He co-designed the most recent iteration of their SONAR system by creating hardware test-beds for the software engineers using Altium PCB CAD software and Eagle. He also designed PCBs and Microchip PIC software for customer specific systems that became core products: weather stations and tide monitors. He also worked offshore undertaking bathymetric surveys.
