Senior Radiation Physicist
As the technical expert for low-energy imaging modules I was mainly involved in the development of Rapiscan's current low-energy scanning systems with the aim of maximizing their imaging performance. This required collaborative work between the Rapiscan RnD department and X-ray equipment manufacturers for which I headed the design and implementation of new X-ray imaging units. This work was supplemented with a variety of high-level X-ray and optical-model simulations allowing the behaviour of systems undergoing radiation exposure from a Rapiscan product to be fully understood.Key Responsibilities · Design of X-ray based imaging systems for inspection of cargo and vehicles.· Design and development of Monte Carlo based models of X-ray imaging systems.· Development of analytical models for X-ray detection.· Development of shielding packages for high-energy inspection systems.· Research and development of enhanced detector systems.· Research and development of enhanced radiation sources.· Top down design of new projects in support of tender processes.· Bottom up design of new technologies from an imaging basis.· Provision of image processing, data analysis and experimental work.· Provide supervision of external University projects.
Radiation Physicist
I worked predominantly on the development of the Rapiscan CVI RefleXion imaging modules. These devices are capable of providing low-dose penetrative images of occupied vehicles from both the side and underside of the vehicle. My work involved the conceptual design of the product range using a combination of theoretical 'Monte-Carlo' simulation techniques as well as the experimental characterization of the units throughout their stages of development; quality of performance, consistency, efficiency, durability etc. I dedicated a significant portion of time looking into both data-acquisition and image-processing techniques in order to optimise the output from the Phase-1 design of the units. I led the implementation of Radiation safety procedures based upon experimental and theoretical dose measurements/calculations for the systems. Taking the lead in collaborations with X-ray source manufacturers, we developed a bespoke source configuration for the RefleXion units resulting in a maximised signal and two-fold improvement in image clarity.
Postdoctorate Nuclear Physics Researcher
A 6 month period to develop myself into an independent Nuclear physics researcher. Within this time frame I took a leading role in performing my own experiment at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland, the proposal for which I had successfully accepted by an international PAC advisory committee the year beforehand.
