About Dr. Pui-Ying Iroh Tam

Pui-Ying Iroh Tam, MBBCh, DMed, FAAP, FPIDS, FIDSA, is a paediatric infectious diseases physician-scientist with 20+ years of clinical experience and academic/research leadership, primarily in the Global South.Dr. Iroh Tam’s research is focused on infectious diseases and global child health. Her research areas include pneumonia, diarrhoeal disease, sepsis, antimicrobial resistance, and antimicrobial stewardship, and has spanned the spectrum of translational research from phylogenomics to clinical trials to implementation science. She secured over $3.29M in external grant funding as co-/PI and has over 80 peer-reviewed publications. Her original research has been published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, Vaccine, and Archives of Diseases in Childhood, among many others.She was previously based full-time in Malawi for 8 years where she led the Paediatrics and Child Health Research Group at the Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Programme, and was a consultant to the Malawi Ministry of Health to develop the National Malawi Child Health Strategy. She currently serves as a consultant to the World Health Organization on implementation research around newborn care in low- and middle-income countries.In her current role at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, Dr. Iroh Tam leads a division of 2,400 research staff and leverages the field sites, clinical facilities, and laboratories in the region to guide and implement a cutting edge and thematic transformative research agenda encompassing enteric and respiratory infections, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, vaccinology, and HIV/AIDS. This includes translating research to influence national and global policies. Her professional mission is capacity-building in the Global South, with the goal of developing her team to become global health leaders in infectious diseases and child health, through compassionate leadership and effective supervision, mentoring, and coaching.In her spare time, aside from raising her children to be fully realised beings, Dr. Iroh Tam is a life and leadership coach for women professionals.
