While I have been developing rules for games since middle school (I once recreated the Star Wars d20 system without any books based off of one weekend of playing at camp), I've been applying myself towards game design seriously since 2003. This involves weekly exercises where I take a design challenge and write up systems and designs to meet my goals. Sometimes, they are made with the intent of actual products, while other times they are simply mental exercises. Since May 2012, I have been publishing some of these exercises on ryringames.com as well as giving free copies of two tabletop RPG systems, one of which is a full d20 system built mostly from scratch. I am adapting my Java programming knowledge to program using GML. Recently I've launched a successful Kickstarter for my card game Sentia Arena.

I worked to develop logic for the automated transformation of bill data from various worldwide carriers into a normalized database. The maintenance of this database using SQL was also one of our common tasks: loading, deleting, or transforming the data so that it properly processes. A great deal of time is spent as a liaison between users and the developers, translating layman terms to more technical speech of the developers, and vice versa. Writing clear User Stories for upcoming projects was paramount. Additionally, I was able to identify an aspect of the process that could be improved to give the user more visibility and control over the data without having to involve the developers. I researched the issue in great detail, then developed an exact technical spec for how the new JAVA page would work, including how to respond to invalid data or various error states. After mapping the process using Visio, I’d then track the issue through testing and resolution utilizing JIRA and an Agile approach as a Product Owner.

I worked both remotely and in person as a business analyst focused on supply chain management. I was tasked with implementing an ERP update(JDE) across 11 manufacturing plants. I developed training documents, technical specs for both reports and Rfgen applications, and developed processes used in both supply chain and traffic. I trained hundreds of individuals and provided support for a myriad of issues that arose. The job varied greatly from project management, technical writing, teaching, bug hunting, and liaison between users and the developers.One of the major parts of the position was the systems development life cycle. It would always begin with gathering requirements from users, which I would then translate into a technical spec to be attached to a dev ticket. This technical spec would take into account both user requirements as well as technical limitations of the systems we were using. Once the dev got to the ticket, they would product a prototype based on my technical spec which I would then need to test. As with all software development, there was a lot of testing and iteration before we got a functional product we could present to the users. Of course, that wasn’t the end of the cycle because after teaching and implementing the product to the users, inevitably new requirements would come from the users, which would end up in a new ticket.One example is users requested the ability to transfer groups of items as a single entity. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the license plate(LP) license of JDE, so we had to develop multiple LP based RFgen applications for the various needs of the multiple plants. This was a huge multi-year undertaking as each plant had slightly different needs that had to be met within a hand-held scan gun.

I wrote articles and answered questions as a freelancer for both the gaming website sentrytotem.com and the website write.com which included technical writing, as well as web-based research.

I worked in the Vigo County court house as a summer job. I worked in both Division 4 and the Juvenile courts. I assisted the clerks in processing over 50 new cases a day and helped them develop a workflow that helped streamlining the filing process.

Worked without direct supervision to manage resident safety and diffuse conflicts between residents.I worked at the security desk, making sure that unauthorized visitors were not allowed in the dorm at night. I often had to deal with drunk and belligerent students and resolve conflicts that arose between residents.
