CEO of PPCL | Process Engineering and Consulting ExpertInnovative Chemical Engineer and CEO of PPCL As the CEO of PPCL, which I founded in 1994, I lead a technology research and development company firmly rooted in Chemical Engineering that Invented and patented Geometric Process Control Technology. PPCL specializes in high-dimensionality (hundreds to thousands of process and lagging KPI variables aka. dimensions) operating envelopes for much better operation of process plants. We use geometry instead of algebra, statistics or "predictive analytics" to give much better and more understandable (for operators through to top management) results contributing directly to bottom-line results through the reduction of operational variability. To use our methods requires good process understanding by the process or control engineer, and no mathematics or equations beyond high-school maths because it is geometry so entirely visual. It truly is both "self-service analytics" and "interrogative visualization".We don't claim it is Artificial Intelligence or AI, although some parts are ML, and we can see areas where future use of neural net methods might be helpful. With over 20 patents and 180+ clients worldwide, we deliver easy-to-use end-user software solutions that improve process efficiency, optimization, and understanding.I have more than 40 years of experience as a chemical engineer and a process consultant, working with various industries and various applications from production planning and scheduling, compliance, knowledge discovery, process control and optimization across most segments of process plants including Steel, Oil Refining and Midstream, Heavy Chemicals, Speciality and Pharmaceutical chemicals including multi-stage, multi-phase batch, pulp and paper, power generation, LNG, GTL and mineral processing. We often start projects with operator alarm management in single or multi-mode Continuous processes or multi-phase batch processes where we have brought new understanding of the importance of always-meaningful operator alarms within an integrated view of the whole process. I am passionate about finding new ways to embrace high-dimensionality process data, and extending the use of "geometric models without maths" into polymers, Process Start-up and incorporation of MPC. Our mission is to help process plants reduce operational variability and detect developing events much earlier than is possible today. We have achieved a lot in nearly 30 years and there is much more yet to come.

CeoProcess Plant Computing Limited May 1994 - PresentGerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, GbPPCL is an innovative technology research and development company busy building a portfolio of patents around its focus area of Operating Envelopes and delivering its inventions to operating plants in three standard software products. We are chemical engineers and use n-dimensional geometry made possible by the parallel coordinates transformation to embrace high-dimensionality in process data rather than striving to reduce it. We have over 20 patents and some 140+ large process companies using one or both of the two software products within which we deliver our inventions. The range of applications is very wide from everyday process stewardship and process understanding through finding optimized operating windows and much better alarm rationalization in much less time and on to modelling operating envelopes as n-dimensional solids for use in continuous and batch process control (open and closed loop), condition monitoring and fault prediction. We provide an overview of several of these areas in free monthly webinars with live use of the products to show the simplicity and lack of maths knowledge required of the process engineer and process operator. You can enrol for these and other webinars on www.ppcl.com where you will also find papers and articles for download and recordings of past webinars. -

Manager Emea Process Plant Computing CentreIbm 1969 - 1994Armonk, New York, Ny, UsI led the implementation of my first DDC control computer within a few months of IBM then joined the development team for the Prospro 3 process control product and assisted in its implementation at Esso France and Kaucuk-Kralupy, Czechoslovakia. Following the withdrawal of the IBM 1800 computer I joined the IBM/Exxon Advanced Control System (ACS) Project in Clear Lake, Texas as one of a small team of system designers in a 150-man project. ACS was designed to perform DDC and Supervisory control of all of an oil refinery's onsites and offsites, including path selection and operation, on a single mainframe computer. I assisted in implementation of the first production system at Esso Strathcona, Canada before returning to UK to work on data collection systems in the steel industry and then production scheduling in the oil industry. Following the 3-Mile Island nuclear plant near-disaster in the late seventies IBM was persuaded to make the ACS system into a generally available product so I returned to Houston for a year of the productisation project then returned to UK to set up and manage the IBM Centre for Process Plant Computing at Greenford. My focus was EMEA and the development of smaller centres in individual countries to suit the way in which IBM was then organised but also working closely with a similar centre in Japan and a marketing centre in the USA. Several internal taboos, such as hiring industry-experienced consultants from outside of IBM, were broken and the Process Plant Computing Centre was very successful. In later days it took on development of major extensions to ACS, or RTPMS as it was by then known, and the itinerary of operational ACS systems grew to well over 100 by the time I left IBM in 1994. Some of them are still operating today. -
