Scientist, Entrepreneur, New Product Evangelist, CEO, Consultant, and AuthorI received my Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Caltech in 1996. After leaving Caltech, I have been on the business side of science. I have worked in at least 4 start-ups, twice serving as CEO. I have also served as a consultant to dozens of companies in the laboratory reagents and diagnostics markets. I usually concentrate on the focus of the executive team, industry relationship development, fund-raising, investor management and developing collaborations or acquisitions. The entrepreneurial urge hit while I was at Caltech and it has never left. During graduate school, I would compare offerings from various suppliers to find the best item at the best price for the lab. That led to the concept of what was then a novel database driven online purchasing system website for life science products and Anderson Unicom Group (AUG). AUG grew from a concept in 1994 to a full-fledged business, competing with much larger companies by 1996.In 2000, BioCarta, a San Diego based immunology products company acquired the assets of AUG and asked me to stay on and, later, to run the operation. I concentrated on improving supplier and customer confidence and arranged for additional funding to grow the operation. While I continued to consult with many early stage companies, I spent half of 2006, and the first quarter of 2007 writing Maps for Modern Magellans: Charts for Captains of Commerce. It was released in May of 2007. The series is written for people who feel frustrated after starting a business and then realizing they need help but believe they do not have time to read a business book to get that help.Specialties: Improving employee morale, Fund raising, Strategic planning, Brand focus, New Product Development

Chief Marketing OfficerSelect University Technologies, Inc. Feb 2010 - Mar 2011SUTI works with Universities to turn discoveries into viable companies. As Chief Marketing Officer it is my duty to see that things are properly introduced to the market. Because our model is different this has greater challenges than usual. One of the great things about SUTI for me is how closely the business development model is to the topics I discussed in my book. I am able to put into practice those concepts on a daily basis.Currently we have a Wind Turbine that uses advanced airfoil technology to operate at lower and higher wind speeds than standard commercial turbines. We have an air conditioner that uses water as the refrigerant instead of dangerous CFC or HCFCs. We have an oil condition monitor that helps you know when to change your oil instead of guessing. Software to improve Decision Support Software refinement. We are also working on a few others that are not quite ready to be revealed.

CeoBiocarta Oct 2002 - May 2003BioCarta, is a Proteomic research reagents company. I joined the company in 2000 to direct the growth and development of the ecommerce and web site portions of the business. In October of 2002, after the company had spent the initial $6 million in funding, I was asked to attempt to restore or salvage the company. I determined the best course of action to be a merger of three companies owned or partially controlled by the BioCarta board of Directors; BioCarta, Orbigen Inc. and Gene May (all in San Diego). Restored confidence in the company among partners, customers, suppliers, employees and investors. BioCarta sales increased 4X over previous year - $300K to $1.2 million (not including new partners).
