Profile bio

About Roz Stewart-Hall

I support people to find creative and inclusive ways of situating evaluation as an imaginative continuation of ‘the event’, because I believe in the value of reflective practice as part of an evaluation process and because reflection (either through conversation or creative processes) solidifies the value of what we have done, turning experience into cognitive recognition. I also believe that the people involved in any activity or experience are the experts who should have roles in establishing criteria and in devising relevant evaluation processes. I believe that evaluation has a close connection with power and that co-evaluation processes are key if different cultural experiences and different types of cultural capital are to be valued equally. I have worked in the field of socially engaged arts practice since 1991. My PhD was based on a programme of action research, within which young people were co-researchers. The research, which took place between 1997 and 2000, explored young people’s uses of digital technology in informal spaces. The consequent thesis, completed in 2000, was entitled ‘Practicing Inclusivity with New Media: Young People, Digital Technology and Democratic Cultural Participation.’ The thesis described how the research led to a ‘process-generated’ approach to evaluation. The approach and methodology that developed through the research, and which continues to inform my ongoing practice, has been of interest internationally and has led to my contribution to international debates around developing co-creative approaches to evaluation. I have worked and continue to work for a wide range of arts organisations, developing and using co-creative approaches to evaluation and embedding ongoing reflection into practice. I work in a way that is informed by a belief in the value of reflective practice as part of an evaluation process.

Listed skills include Art, Photography, Arts Administration, Curating, and 17 others.
