Researched various ways to manipulate hormonal signals in plants for the benefit of the horticulture industry. This includes alkaline buffer treatments to 'trick' plants into thinking they are water-stressed.I also researched the potential for using bacteria (Variovorax paradoxus) that metabolises the pre-cursors to ethylene and thus can limit the activity of this deleterious hormone in cultivated plants.

Research into the potential for novel fibre crops in the UK. Investigated the potential for the controlled retting of flax using specialised microbial products (Geobacillus thermoglucosidasius) and pectinase enzymes.Cultivated flax and nettles on farms to study their potential in the textile industry.
