About Dr. Sandy Goldberg
I always considered myself one of the lucky ones — in good health, delighted with my job and surrounded by a loving family and friends. In 2000 that was shattered in an instant when I heard: "You have breast cancer and you need to have surgery immediately.”As NBC5's on air Nutrition Contributor I decided to share my experience with our viewers, not the norm in 2000. For the next 14 months the cameras were ever present and the resulting special, One Woman's Story, won an Emmy. More importantly it brought cancer out of the closet. Afterwards, I was given the opportunity to create a cable show on CAN TV for The American Cancer Society where viewers called in live with their questions. That 13 week series changed my life. There are the haves and the have-nots where access to timely quality medical care is concerned. I discovered the CAN TV were using our show as their primary care physician. Every week I would return calls that did not make it on air and would offer suggestions from the perspective of one who had access to anything and everything medicine had to offer. It was a painful discovery to learn people were not reaching out for help because they felt they weren't worthy due to a lack of financial circumstance. Awful. The night the foundation was born, I came home from the cable show and burst into tears. My husband — a man of few words — asked why and what I was going to do about it. "Start a foundation." I said. At that moment I heard my mom's voice: she had two favorite sayings: "There is always a silver lining" "We are all family and we have to help each other through the tough times." And in 2002, A Silver Lining Foundation was born. Our goal is to someday take these programs nationwide. Our mission is to provide that same sense of inclusion, warmth and love coupled with timely and dignified access to cancer resource information, outreach and testing.Specialties: Providing…• Easy access to cancer resource information • Quality of life assistance during treatment and beyond• Cost free mammograms and follow up diagnostic testing

Consisting of five programs:THE CHICAGOLAND CANCER INFORMATION COALITION (CCIC), 2002. CCIC fuses support and expertise of several prominent cancer advocacy groups and the City of Chicago City Services 311 bilingual information access hotline, 311.. CCIC has built a solid program of community outreach toucheing the lives of aover one million people. THE EVELYN GOLDBERG MAMMOGRAPHY CENTER 2012, previously the Evelyn Goldberg Espite Center (2004) at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago. Perhaps the greatest tribute that a child can give a parent, the "Evy" Center, named for Sandy's mother, provides the entire spectrum of breast health testing for uninsured and underinsured individuals at that location.BUY A MOM A MAMMOGRAM™, premiered at the Foundation's Inaugural Gala, October 7, 2005. This program provides cost-free mammograms and testing for uninsured and underinsured women in the greater Chicagoland, Rockford and Elgin areas From a single hospital partner, BAMAM sites have expanded to include fifteen partner hospitals.KEEP aBREAST, the foundtion/s 4th program, 2011 is a face-to-face, hands on, multimedia breast health education presentation for high school girls between the ages of 15 and 19 which has since been expanded to include an adjunct program for adult women.In 2013, in response to the need for testing of uninsured and underinsured breast cancer survivors our fifth program SURVIVE TO THRIVE was added to address the unique needs of survivors.
