Chief Operating OfficerOurrainwater Aug 2022 - May 2024Exeter, England, United KingdomOur Rainwater provides water companies with a software-as-a-service digital platform to facilitate the adoption of rainwater management systems (RMS) such as rainwater harvesting tanks and rain planters. We help water companies achieve regulatory compliance by encouraging homeowners to capture and store their rainwater to help reduce surface water flooding, sewer spills into our waterways and for resilience against drought. -
Postdoctoral Research FellowUniversity Of Exeter Jul 2021 - May 2024I am currently working on an Ofwat: Innovation in Water Challenge Project to develop a 'business model canvas' for drinking water and rainwater storage tanks to harness real time control solutions to explore optimised strategies for real-time top up control.Prior to this I worked on a five week research project to explore the impact of climate change on homes and housebuilding in the future. The climate-related risk scenarios explored the impact of a rise in temperature of 2°C and 4°C and were used in the development of Climate Related Financial Disclosures. -
Postdoctoral ResearcherImperial College London Feb 2021 - Jun 2021London, England, United KingdomAs an accredited researcher with the Office for National Statistics, I worked on a National Core Study project - How can healthcare data be connected with wastewater surveillance of COVID-19 in a privacy preserving fashion to inform epidemiological models and democratise data access. https://www.hdruk.ac.uk/projects/how-can-healthcare-data-be-connected-with-wastewater-surveillance-of-covid-19-in-a-privacy-preserving-fashion-to-inform-epidemiological-models-and-democratise-data-access/ -
Postdoctoral Research AssociateUniversity Of The West Of England Sep 2019 - Jan 2021I worked as a qualitative researcher on the ENDOWS knowledge exchange research project to understand SME resilience to drought. This information was used to inform the development of a decision support tool. I also worked on the Drought Risk and You (DRY) project combining drought narratives and digital storytelling with catchment based hydrological research for a GIS web-based utility. I contributed to teaching at the University of the West of England as an Associate Lecturer on the BSc (Hons) Environmental Management degree course. -
Phd: Building Resilience In The Uk Water Sector: A Systems Based Approach To Emergency PlanningUniversity Of Exeter Sep 2015 - Jul 2019Exeter -
Msc In VolcanologyUniversity Of Bristol Sep 2013 - Sep 2014Bristol, United KingdomCompleted an MSc in Volcanology which included the completion of a research project and comprised the following taught modules:Physics of Volcanology and Geological FlowsScientific CommunicationRemote SensingNatural Hazards in Central AmericaNatural HazardsThe research project concentrated on the development of elastic, visco-elastic and thermo-mechanical numerical models to understand the causative mechanisms of ground deformation at Campi Flegrei Caldera, Italy.Using the structural mechanics and heat flow modules of COMSOL Multiphysics® (version 4.4) the models demonstrated how structural heterogeneity and inelastic rheology fundamentally control subsurface stress and strain portioning in calderas with implications how the evolution of stress is interpreted over time.Models were also developed to define fault parameters demonstrating how modelling faults as two mechanical units comprising a fault core and a damage zone will lead to an increase in the amount of vertical displacement as compared to modelling a fault as a single elastic inclusion. The implementation of faults within elastic models was investigated and the effect of increasing pressure, changing the source geometry and varying fault inclination within an elastic and visco-elastic domain was explored demonstrating how rheology plays a fundamental role in stress/strain relationships occurring at depth within volcanic zones. Finally, solving for the inverse problem was conducted using the methodology developed by Dr James Hickey using the Optimization module of COMSOL Multiphysics®, version 4.4 and observed GPS data for the period of resurgence between 2008 and 2013 at Campi Flegrei Caldera to determine first order source characteristics such as depth, pressure and semi-major axis. -
Flood Risk Management OfficerEnvironment Agency Jul 2002 - May 2007SomersetAn experienced Somerset Flood Warning Duty Officer, took the lead role during fluvial and tidal flood events managing the Area Incident Room and calling in key personnel to ensure an effective and co-ordinated response. Accurately interpreted meteorological, hydrological and environmental data to determine the appropriate level of warning to disseminate during flood events. Accurately identified flood risk areas in both fluvial and coastal locations to develop a five year public awareness strategy. This included establishing targets, effective communication techniques, managing expectations, marketing, branding and working closely with the British Marketing Research Bureau to establish base levels of awareness. Technical expert in the development of Multi-Agency Exercises. Selected and provided real-time data, knowledge and expertise in the development of real-time simulation exercises for Local Authority Emergency Planners. Provided technical support during the exercises and assisted in the evaluation and improvement of the multi-agency response to flooding.Successfully worked in partnership with Local Authorities and Community groups in the creation of Flood Warden Schemes. Worked very closely with community representatives to establish a Community Flood Action Plan for when a flood alert was raised and realistically managed the expectations of the Environment Agency. Developed 9 Flood Warden Schemes over a 12 month period for locations at high risk of flooding and presented the results of these valuable partnerships at the National Flood Forum Conference in 2004.Identified, recommended and developed a realistic and practical contingency plan in the event of a system failure of the Automated Flood Warning system whilst a member of the Regional Flood Warning Dissemination Group. This was successfully implemented during flood events and insured that timely warnings were disseminated to those at risk. -
Flood Warning OfficerEnvironment Agency Jul 2001 - Jun 2002SomersetResponsible for the management of the Automated Voice Messaging System and training of duty staff.Maintained the Automated Voice Messaging System and the Offline Database and ensured the flood warning system was operating effectively.Maintained and accurately updated the database of people and organisations at flood risk and made recommendations for improvement.Developed a flood warning contingency plan in the event of a systems failure. The plan was successfully implemented during a flood event.Trained the flood warning duty officers in the use of the flood warning system, contingency plan and developed the assistant flood warning duty officer training pack. Led in the development of the Flood Warning Public Communications database for the North Wessex area.Actively sought to improve the flood warning process by increasing the number of recipients receiving warnings.Contributed to raising awareness by designing questionnaires and leaflets to ensure recipients understood what to do when a warning was disseminated.
