Sarah Hackett is on a career break.Until August 2021, she was Professor of Modern European History. Her research interests focused upon European Muslim immigration in the post-1945 era, particularly to Britain and Germany. Her book ("Foreigners, Minorities and Integration: The Muslim Immigrant Experience in Britain and Germany", Manchester University Press, 2013) examines the impact that Britain's relatively liberal immigration policy and Germany's rigid guest-worker rotation phenomenon have had on the long-term integration of Muslim immigrants at a local level. It looks specifically at the sectors of employment, housing and education, offers a re-assessment of the term "integration" and questions the notion that Islam has played an overwhelming role in ethnic minorities' experiences. Her other research interests include European city-level migration and integration policies, migration and religion, and Islam in Europe in historical perspective.Dr. Hackett joined Bath Spa University in 2013 having previously taught at the University of Sunderland. During February 2014, she was a visiting lecturer at the University of Southern Denmark's Centre for Contemporary Middle East Studies. During March 2015, she was a visiting lecturer at the University of Bergen's Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion.Her research has been funded by the German Historical Institute in London (GHIL) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). She also held a Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Durham.
