Composite Manufacturing EngineerB/E Aerospace Mar 2008 - Apr 2011During my time at B/E I was the lead M.E. for RTM and Resin Infusion of carbon fibre composite components on a range of programmes. I established process instructions and associated documentation for the above manufacturing processes as well as T&D operations, ensuring that the data provided to the operations team enabled components to be manufactured to the standards outlined by the FAA and CAA. Other aspects of my role have included; leading problem solving activities, process development/improvements, liaising with suppliers to identify new materials and integrate them into our processes, improved fabric utilisation (achieved a 45% reduction in material costs by changing the fabric design) and reduced consumable costs. I have been trained in lean manufacturing principles (Toyota production system) and I am the only certified Kaizen leader within the composites unit and one of only four within B/E (UK) Ltd. I have lead the composites unit 'lean manufacturing' and 'standardised work' activities and created production plans which resulted in reductions in labour hours, cycle times, process wastes, floor space requirements and resulted in increased production rates, with less operators required.I was appointed project lead on the latest composites programme, which required me to co-ordinate with various departments such as design, quality and procurement within the UK and USA. Key tasks I co-ordinated included: integration of manufacturing considerations into design, tendering process for RTM tooling and other equipment e.g. cranes and resin injectors, development of the manufacturing process plans, definition of labour capacity requirements and the tracking of manufacturing costs including materials and labour. -

My work established the relationship between altering the binder tex of the weave architecture and the subsequent mechanical properties of the composite. I used a wide range of analysis methods and equipment including; Impactors, Thermal analysis equipment, Tensile and Compression test equipment, High speed imaging cameras, Optical microscopy methods, NDT techniques and analytical methods -
