I am teaching surgery lab and special species (exotics) to 4th term students. I am getting to combine my passion for teaching with my love of clinical medicine in my two favorite areas: surgery and exotics. I am enjoying the interactions with my fellow faculty while learning from each other.

Provide medical and surgical care for approximately 100 animals at this AZA accredited facility. The collection is mostly native California wildlife (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates) that is non-releasable with the museum’s focus to educate and inspire its visitors to take care of their local wildlife habitat. Perform standard veterinary responsibilities (medical and surgical) for the Steinhart Aquarium collection of animals when a second veterinarian is needed or for relief coverage when the head veterinarian is unavailable. I perform anything from annual physical exams, quarantine entrance and exit exams, pre-ship exams, emergency exams, to complex procedures/surgeries. The collection includes: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and invertebrates. This is an AZA accredited aquarium and home to 35,000 plus live animals.The Aquarium is an amazing place to work because the biologist are so dedicated and knowledgeable about the animals they work with. There is also a supportive team atmosphere. Working at the California Academy of Sciences allows access to some of the top researchers and research being done today.

In charge of veterinary care for the temporary Ostrich exhibit. The Academy acquired eggs from a variety of ranchers, artificially incubating them, and then the chicks were raised on exhibit. Duties include: all veterinary care required by the birds from assisting hatches to any surgeries required, overseeing the staff biologists, training staff, creating protocols for the staff, and collecting data which was presented in a talk for veterinarians and veterinary students. When time permitted, I assisted the head veterinarian with other veterinary tasks for the rest of the collection.

Perform routine and complaint-related inspections of veterinary hospitals, in order to educate and help the managing veterinarian bring their hospital(s) into compliance with minimum standards and avoid enforcement actions. PTE

Small Animal Practice with a large Rabbit and Rodent case load. I was privileged to be able to cover for Dr. Carolyn Harvey, Rabbit vet extraordinaire. The Rabbit clientele at Chabot and the local rescue groups were incredible to work with.

Oversee the veterinary care and management of the museum’s collection of 100+ native wildlife species and the rehabilitation center that receives between 5,000 and 6,000 injured wildlife per year. Rebuilt and reorganized the hospital department and hired 4 of the 5 permanent staff (1 RVT, 1 technician, 1 associate DVM, and a hospital director). Brought the hospital into compliance. Instituted proper NFPA labeling. Updated the live-collection’s veterinary records to be compliant with USDA and AZA requirements. Improved the medical diagnostics and veterinary care that the live-collection receives. Implemented several geriatric plans for the aging collection. Managed the veterinary portion of Lindsay’s operating budget. Streamlined the inventory and shopped vendors to minimize overhead expenses.

Examine avian and exotic species that are in the society’s care. Consult on proper care of avian and exotic species. Consult on legal cases involving canine, feline, avian and exotic species.

The hospital sees 60% feline, 40% exotic (avian, rodent, lagomorphs, reptiles, ferrets, and wildlife from local rehabilitation place), and the occasional canine (1-3 per week). The clinic uses AVImark veterinary software.

Participated in the daily activities of the zoo’s clinic. The clinic oversaw the entire zoo/aquarium population and the large 600+ avian specie breeding facility. 95% of my time was spent working with Psittacines, penguins, and puffins. Performed in-house hematology, cytology, and microbiology. Gained experience with avian necropsy, endoscopy, crop biopsy, air sac cannulation, avian surgery/anesthesia, chick medicine, and population avian medicine. The rest of my time was spent working on the large cats in the zoo’s collection.
