Sense-T was a first mover in the internet of things and big data in Tasmania. We used data, sensing technologies and data analytics to help see alignments and opportunities, to improve decision making and create impact for business and government by enhancing decision-making. As Director, I led a high performance team of ten including eight software/mechanical/electrical engineers experienced in Industry 4.0 technologies and processes and self-funded three labs to support the research projects with a cash value of $25 million. Funding was attained from Tasmania Government, Australian Government, the Australian Research Council, the Blue Economy CRC, iMOVE CRC and Soils CRC, and direct from industry.During my time at Sense-T, I maintained my relationship with the Australian Maritime College as Associate Professor and then Professor through PhD supervision of maritime and supply chain projects and conducting maritime focused projects.

In 2019 whilst Director of Sense-T, I became a Chief Investigator and the Deputy Director of the Research Hub. On the retirement of the Director, Assoc Prof Laurie Bonney in 2020, of whom I acknowledge his great work with industry and implementing systematic business processes, after a comprehensive interview process with the Australian Research Council panel, I became the Director of the $4,835,000 Research Hub.

The role of Academic Lead was undertaken concurrently with my role as Director of Sense-T. The Industry 4.0 TestLab was a $2 million project part funded by the Australian Government. as one of the six Teslabs The TestlLab on the Integrity of Food was one of six TestLab funded as a national strategy to help prepare businesses for the emerging technological changes created by the Industry 4.0 industrial revolution. The Industry 4.0 TestLab at the University of Tasmania involved researchers from seven academic Schools (departments) that purchased cutting edge sensor related equipment to work closely with businesses in agriculture and aquaculture to expose them to Industry 4.0 technologies and processes. responsibilities include planning and integrating the research opportunities to capitalise on the TestLab equipment, My role as Academic Lead was to align the views of researchers to ensure an integrated approach, meet the timelines for the formal TestLab launch, increase awareness of Industry 4.0 within the University and SMEs, and provide meaningful outcomes for Tasmanian industry.

This role was an initial secondment from the Australian Maritime College to be the inaugural Director to develop a technology-focused Logistics Lab in Hobart, equally funded by the University of Tasmania and NICTA (now Data 61, CSIRO). The Logistics lab began with 2 research engineers that was increased to three. The role of this $1 million project was to initiate and introduce Tasmanian businesses to the benefits of engaging with technology and data to improve business processes. During the first one year, I was offered the role of the Director of Sense-T and implemented the business model I developed in the Logistics Lab to change the structure and focus of Sense-T.

As Head, Department of Maritime and Logistics Management (MLM) at AMC:• Initiated new quality systems for on-campus and distance education teaching processes.• Adopted new technologies to create teaching efficiencies and improve student experiences.• Developed a culture of research excellence by mentoring MLM colleagues via collaboration to increase publications and build an international MLM profile.• Spearheaded greater engagement with industry at State and national levels, and with agents and colleges in Singapore/Malaysia resulting in significantly increasing student numbers.• My research publications advanced new knowledge in seaport marketing and solving seafarer shortages resulting in funded international invitations as keynote speaker.
