My research aims to develop platform biomaterials with improved efficacy, specialising in cardiovascular applications such as stents and synthetic vascular grafts. Working in multi-disciplinary research teams we have expertise in materials engineering, assessment of blood compatibility and interactions with endothelial and smooth muscle cells. A strength of the group is their comprehensive range of pre-clinical models for evaluation of new materials and vascular devices. Recent work has focused on the role of inflammation in the host reaction to implanted materials and the generation of bioactive surfaces to modulate this response. Recent funding success, including NHMRC project, NHMRC development and ARC Linkage demonstrate the quality of our research program and aligns with its goals of developing implants to improve patient lives. Our project to develop new synthetic conduits for arterial revascularisation received the NHMRC Marshall and Warren award for 2018.

Heart Foundation Future Leader FellowUniversity Of Sydney Jan 2022 - PresentSydney, New South Wales, AustraliaCardiovascular disease causes blockages of arteries that supply blood to the heart and the lower legs. Surgical bypass with donor vessels from the patient is the most effective treatment, but these are not always available, leaving surgeons reliant on synthetic materials made from common plastics. My research has identified the strong potential of silk fibroin, a natural biomaterial. This project will determine the best combination of physical and biological properties for a small diameter silk conduit, aiming to provide a new off-the-shelf synthetic graft that could ultimately improve the treatment of Australians suffering from cardiovascular disease. -
