I am passionate about working to make a difference. Recently, I managed a team working on drug repurposing for Alzheimer’s disease which discovered two drugs, fluphenazine and trimipramine. I subsequently negotiated the licensing of these drugs to pharma for use in clinical trials.During my career, I have written, applied for, managed, and collaborated with companies and academia on many grants.I am experienced in financial management, both at the top level within businesses and in projects within these organisations. This experience involves preparing financial projections, finance scrutiny and monitoring, and costs management.I have extensive experience with presenting work and projects to outside agencies, ‘selling’ projects, providing updates and presenting data. I have presented innovative technologies to VC and Angel investor audiences. I have presented results, technologies and products at various research conferences and tradeshows including Medica and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.I have worked with many diverse teams to deliver research goals. At the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, I supervised PhD, BSc and MSc students and research assistants and devised and ran practical training and workshop sessions overseas in Taiwan, Asia and Africa. As Deputy Director of the National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory, I managed the unit, supervising junior and senior staff, reporting to the Director and the senior management at the Health Protection Agency. Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis was then emerging as a problem.As Deputy Director of the National Tuberculosis Reference Unit and as CSO and consultant to C1H Ltd, I devised and implemented the molecular diagnostic services, training staff and ensuring an efficient service and workflow.I have built strong working relationships through mutual respect and by encouraging others to maximise their potential and take credit for their ability and achievements.I have the ability to see the big picture and have solved problems by putting pieces of the puzzle in place to develop a solution. For example, WHO stated the need for improved diagnosis of tuberculosis. I was able to satisfy the required parameters and oversee the development of a simple and inexpensive test which was used extensively in small hospitals in Japan.These different projects have involved extensive domestic and international travel for project implementation and monitoring. For a while, I was visiting South Africa, Zambia, China and the US monthly.
