About Tyrone Roach

Electrical Engineer with experience in academia and applied R&D specializing in engineering solutions to complex problems in applied electromagnetics (e.g., antennas, phased arrays, wireless communication and space systems). Dr. Tyrone Roach received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2010. Later that year in 2010, he joined the Georgia Tech Research Institute as a Research Engineer where he contributed to a variety of sponsored programs based around his technical expertise in applied electromagnetics. With ambitions for a career in academia, Dr. Roach began serving in 2015 as an Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma (OU). As a faculty member, he engaged himself in a myriad of activities revolved around the core components beholden to the career path of an assistant professor: teaching, research, and service.In January 2017, Dr. Roach resigned from OU and from that point on decided to take a voluntarily and purposeful break from the workforce. He interests turned to seeking employment opportunities in an applied R&D environment wherein he can apply acquired engineering work experiences to help create and advanced technologies that offer significant benefits to societies and economies. Dr. Roach joined the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, CA in July 2018. His research interests and initiatives in the field include system level integration of phased arrays with adaptive and multifunctional characteristics; expanding small array functionality in wireless sensor networks; transforming array capabilities into emerging and next-generation wireless communication technologies; and realizing antenna/antenna array technologies with novel physical materials and manufacturing techniques.During this period of the break, Dr. Roach has had the opportunity to invest more in himself, acquire a myriad of fulfilling life experiences, and ‘design think’ the next steps in his life going forward. He is in pursuit of a career in which he can apply acquired engineering work experience in R&D and academia to help create and advanced technologies that offer significant benefits to societies and economies—those that have the ability to alter established ways of doing things. He contributed significantly to a variety of projects meeting the needs of the organization illustrating his growth and development in phased array antenna design, electromagnetic modeling and simulation, analysis and characterization of foreign threat radar systems, and other wider reaching technical areas. Furthermore, his technical contributions and innovations resulted in his involvement with over 15 government sponsored programs and one internal research and development effort. The results of his efforts led to several key delivered products, numerous final reports and presentations to the customer, multiple interim presentations and reports, and numerous internal briefings and documentation. Dr. Roach’s continuing technical achievements allowed for advancement into project leadership and supervision roles which include task lead on two major projects and lead system analyst for another effort. In many of his roles, he supervised, guided, and trained GTRI faculty of junior, equal, and senior rank to himself. Dr. Roach technical mastery in electromagnetics and antennas continually contributed to sponsored program development in various project efforts and helped expand GTRI’s relationship with a number of sponsors. Further exemplifying his proficiency in the field and ability to take on new challenges, he taught lectures in antenna array theory via video conference to senior level students at a university in Ireland through GT’s Distance Learning program. The course met the objective of bridging international relationships with GTRI and the University of Ireland. In summary, his accomplishments have led to recognition externally and internally via awards and praises from sponsors and senior researchers at GTRI, and eventual promotion to the rank of Senior Research Engineer within the organization.
