About Ty-Ron Douglas, Ph.D

Dr. Ty-Ron M. O. Douglas is the inaugural Associate Athletics Director for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging and Justice at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to this appointment, he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Missouri. He is a highly sought-after international speaker and scholar, who has spoken at institutions such as the NCAA, Sport Exchange Summit, The Ohio State University, University of Wisconsin, Michigan State University, Mizzou Athletics, and The University of Western Cape. In 2015, Dr. Douglas' work was funded by the NCAA to study the experiences of black male student athletes. Dr. Douglas is currently engaging a funded study of athletes in South Africa. Dr. Douglas’ research explores the intersections between identity, community space, and the social and cultural foundations of leadership and education. Specifically, his research interests include Black Masculinity/Black Family/Diaspora Studies, Critical Spirituality, and Community-based Pedagogical Spaces. He earned a Ph.D. in Educational Studies/Curriculum and Teaching with a concentration in Cultural Studies and a Post-Master’s Certificate in School Administration.Dr. Douglas is a community advocate who has taught in K-12 and post-secondary settings, founded and directed a GED Community School, and served as a supervisor of Bermuda Government Summer-day Camp programs. He was also awarded the 2013 Distinguished Dissertation Award by the American Educational Research Association. He has served on the Executive Council of the American Educational Studies Association. Dr. Douglas' most recent publications have appeared in outlets such as Teachers College Record and The Handbook of Research on Educational Leadership for Diversity and Equity. Dr. Douglas was awarded a 2017 Society of Professors of Education Outstanding Book Award and a 2017 AESA Critics' Choice Award for his latest book, "Border Crossing Brothas: Black Males Navigating Race, Place & Complex Space." He has two new books, including “Campus Uprisings: How Student Activists and Collegiate Leaders Resist Racism and Create Hope” (Teachers College Press).
