Research Trainee
Resident Medical Officer
As a Medical Officer at MGM Healthcare, I was responsible for managing patient wards. My key duties included accessing and interpreting the EMR to provide accurate patient assessments, analyzing and interpreting results from various laboratory tests, and performing essential medical procedures such as Foley's catheter insertion, central line removal, nasogastric tube insertion, and basic surgical wound dressings. Additionally, I collaborated with multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality patient care, and ensured compliance with medical protocols and standards. I had the opportunity to be a part of two audits here, NABH and JCI. This role enhanced my clinical skills, strengthened my ability to work under pressure, and reinforced my commitment to patient-centered care.
Clinical Extern
I got an opportunity to work as a clinical extern at Park Slope Cardiology for one-month duration, with Dr Vinod Patel. In this Cardiology rotation, I performed history taking and examination of patients, interpreted EKGs and ECHOs, assisted the staff in cardiac stress tests, and interpreted results and added data using the EMR. I was part of many lower limb balloon angioplasties. As I watched these procedures, I realized how unique each patient is, and how a physician must always be prepared to encounter challenges. I also worked at Dr. Patel's clinic in Queens, where the patient population was very different from that of the city. Healthcare was still not accessible to people from all walks of life. Here, I learned the important art of efficient use of healthcare resources.
Clinical Extern
I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Emmanuel Valery at LaSante Health Center for one month, in the outpatient setting. In this Internal Medicine rotation, I got to work with the eClinical Works EMR. This was a great experience because it was my responsibility to complete the notes for each patient. In the process, I got used to the American medical records system. This was my first rotation in New York, and the diversity of the population amazed me. Talking to patients from all walks of life and helping themheal was a wonderful feeling. I also learnt about the "one patient-one physician-one pharmacy'' system. Controlled drugs were carefully ordered and approved only after double checks. Here I learnt the importance of being calm and focused even on a busy day.
Clinical Extern
In this Internal Medicine rotation, I got to work with Dr. Cedric Coleman for one month, in his outpatient clinic. This was my first clinical experience in the United States. Dr. Coleman's case discussions were like solving puzzles as a team. They improved my thought articulation and also tested my critical thinking. At the end of each day, I felt more confident and comfortable. It provided a new perspective on medical learning and set a platform on which I could build.
Doctor
It was my privilege working with Dr. Gomathi and Dr. Yogeshwaran, at the Indian Red Cross Day Care Hospital. What makes this place special is that the patients do not have to pay for the consult. Anybody, irrespective of their socio-economic status, could walk in. At the Red Cross, we organized several camps. This was my first experience in community work. Visiting some of the slums in Chennai, as a part of a medical team was a wonderful experience. It showed me firsthand, that health care was a basic human right, and as a doctor, I must strive to help all.
Intern
My one year of clerkship in my medical school was my first ever experience of practicing medicine. As I rotated through different departments like Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, and so on, I was slowly beginning to find my true passion, which was Internal Medicine. This was also during the COVID-19 pandemic. Working as an intern in a severely understaffed setting proved more difficult than I had imagined. We had to adapt and overcome. This taughtme resilience.
