Current
Founder And Executive Director
CurrentIn the autumn of 2020, armed with my stimulus check as a starting point, I embarked on a remarkable journey. I established UMA Tulsa, a prominent nonprofit organization empowering predominantly Hispanic communities. Since then, our humble team has grown to include seven dedicated full-time employees specializing in health equity, mental well-being, and business and entrepreneurship. Our relentless efforts have successfully delivered impactful programs and disseminated educational messages, effectively reaching over 60% of Tulsa's vibrant Hispanic population. Our mission has been fueled by a deep commitment to create positive change.Amidst the challenging backdrop of the pandemic, our work took on even greater significance. By prioritizing the health and well-being of our community, we played a pivotal role in bolstering the Covid-19 vaccination rate among Hispanics in Tulsa County. Our concerted efforts led to a remarkable surge, increasing the vaccination rate from a mere 4% to an impressive 30%.Furthermore, our organization has proudly nurtured and guided numerous aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners. To date, we have celebrated the graduation of sixty-eight participants while extending our support to over 200 individuals embarking on their entrepreneurial journeys. Each success story fuels our passion and reaffirms the impact we strive to create.UMA Tulsa stands as a testament to the power of compassion, dedication, and collaboration. With our initial seed funding serving as the catalyst, we have transformed into a force for positive change in our community. As we continue to evolve, our unwavering commitment remains to uplift, empower, and inspire those we serve. Together, we are forging a brighter future for all.
Evaluation Research Project Director
Past positions at OSU: Postdoctoral Research Associate (Sept 2014-Aug 2015); Research Associate (Jan 2013-Aug 2014); Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant (Jan 2010-Dec 2013). I pursued my research interest in mental health, parenting, and acculturation and funded them through federal grants; conducted evaluation research to measure how community programs were making a difference; developed surveys, questionnaires, and guides for focus groups to collect reliable and up-to-date data; and taught undergraduate courses. In both basic research and evaluation projects, I analyzed qualitative and quantitative data and interpreted the results; put together presentations and reports to share the findings with stakeholders and community members, making sure it was easy for them to understand; and helped our partners use the study findings to improve their programs and strategic plans. As the director of several projects, I had the opportunity to lead teams of diverse employees, providing support, coaching, and mentoring. Additionally, I wrote proposals for grants and businesses, research protocols, abstracts, and manuscripts for publication.Software:Qualtrics, IBM SPSS, NVivo, MS Office Suite, Qualtrics, Sharepoint
Program Manager
PROJECT MANAGER (May 2007-July 2009)I oversaw a federally funded after-school program where I planned, implemented, and evaluated everything. We had 200 English Language Learners at Tulsa Public Schools, and I'm proud to say we raised their standardized test scores. I supervised a team of 14 people across two elementary schools, and we increased parent engagement from 38% to a whopping 93%. We set up effective ways to gather data for continuous improvement, and we had the support of five dedicated community partners. I also designed and put into action a program specifically for Latinx students, and as a result, we reduced the dropout rate by 20% among the students who participated. We partnered with community-based organizations to offer additional services to our students.PROGRAM COORDINATOR (June 2005-June 2006)My primary responsibility was coordinating the translation and interpretation program. I also handled customer service and invoicing. I developed a protocol and database to track outcomes to make things more efficient. I trained the staff to use the new database accurately. I closely monitored the data collection process, analyzed the data, and prepared reports for my supervisor. Additionally, I collaborated with other agencies to provide comprehensive support services and tackle community issues. I also assisted my supervisor with research for program development and grant applications.OUTREACH COORDINATOR (April 2004-May 2005)During this time, I led outreach efforts and provided case management services to the Latinx community. I conducted educational workshops for new immigrants and gave presentations to the community.
Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Specialist
I helped clients with severe mental illness by supporting their behavioral rehabilitation. I ran five rehabilitation groups each week, where I taught them important mental health skills. My caseload typically included around 250 clients, with about 10% of them being Spanish speakers who only spoke Spanish. I made sure to keep up with timely and accurate treatment plans and notes as required by ODMHSA. Additionally, I conducted yearly community mental health screenings and gave monthly presentations in both English and Spanish to raise awareness about mental illness and available mental health resources.
