FounderDental Dreams, Llc Dental Assisting School Jun 2022 - PresentTroubled by the statistic that African-Americans make up 13.6% of the US population, but only 3.8% of the dental workforce, Dr. Zerita Buchanan launched the “Dental Dreams, LLC Dental Assisting School” to further diversify the dental workforce and provide under-represented minority students with the economic mobility needed to apply to dental school. In 2022 she was awarded the Tory Burch Foundation Women of Color Grant and formally transformed her private dental practice into a vocational training school that serves as an innovation hub for HBCU students interested in the STEM sciences. The curriculum Dr. Buchanan developed for the assisting school provides students with clinical shadowing experience, x-ray certification, and standardized test preparation required for the dental admission exam. More than 20 pre-dental students from Morehouse College and Spelman College have attended the school and subsequently become certified dental assistants able to work in dental offices across the state of Georgia. Dr. Buchanan's vision to use technology and innovation to train the next generation of diverse and culturally competent dentists has profound positive economic implications for the state of Georgia. The Georgia Board of Dentistry 2022 workforce report details that 20 counties in the state currently have zero practicing dentists. The "Dental Dreams, LLC Dental Assisting School" will most definitely help eliminate the workforce shortage and bring economic mobility to historically marginalized communities.
