About Darren Cheah

I am currently a PhD candidate at Curtin University, where I am researching microbial degradation in the context of energy and resources development. I combine techniques in organic geochemistry, molecular biology, and microbiology to determine biodegradation dynamics in petroleum reserves and alumina wastes, and their applications for sustainable resources development. I graduated from the University of Notre Dame in MSc. Earth Sciences with research concentrations in organic and isotope geochemistry. As an undergraduate from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, I majored in Earth Sciences with emphases on Geochemistry, Geobiology, and Environmental Geology. I also graduated with a Minor in Technical Communication. with a focus on effective dissemination of scientific information toward professionals and popular audiences. My background in scientific research and communication and enabled the development of strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. As a lead investigator in two research projects, I developed useful and transferable skills in time management, data organization and analysis, conceptual understanding, and attention to detail. My past involvement in student groups and event management has also given me experience in leadership and human resource development. I am also open to any opportunities pertaining to environmental and climate change activism, technical and scientific writing/editing/journalism, or STEM teaching.
