    Aeva Mar 2022 - Present
    Mountain View, California, Us
Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Manager for team covering structural and thermal simulations and optimizations.
  • Aeva
    Senior Mechanical Engineer
    Aeva Nov 2018 - Present
    Mountain View, California, Us
Mechanical design and analysis of optical and electromechanical systems for next generation lidar. FEA, CFD, multiphysics simulations to optimize subassembly and system architectures for maximum performance, minimum size, and harsh environments.
  • Uber
Computer Aided Engineering (Cae) Lead, Trucks
    Uber Sep 2016 - Nov 2018
    San Francisco, California, Us
Led CAE of self driving truck mechanical systems. Performed finite element analysis (structural, thermal, CFD), concept design, and design optimization on mechanical systems. Focused on integration of sensors onto semi-truck cab and chassis through flexible and rigid mounts that would allow sensors to perform perception goals optimally and survive extended life simulation and testing. Later led design of full truck sensor integration, including organizing electrical, mechanical, optical, and system engineers to design, test, and deliver next generation platform of self driving truck. Managed several interns and led them to succeed in design projects and analysis projects- two converted to full time employees. Managed small relationships with truck vehicle OEM candidates during development phase along with major relationship with final tuck vehicle OEM.
  • Otto
    Mechanical Engineer
    Otto Jul 2016 - Nov 2018
Performed design and analysis of mechanical systems for in-house LIDAR and self-driving trucks. Focused in finite element analysis and design optimization. Otto was acquired by Uber in September 2016.
  • Hyperloop One
    Mechanical Engineer
    Hyperloop One Jun 2015 - May 2016
Structures TeamOwned the design, development, and manufacturing of Tube Deformer (tooling machine which used 8x 12.5-ton hydraulics to shape 3.3m steel tube). Designed machine in Siemens NX/Unigraphics with Teamcenter. Performed finite element analysis using ANSYS to determine expected structural loads, harmonics, and effects of thermal expansion, and sized parts appropriately for field conditions. Designed various kinds of parts for manufacturing: In addition to standard CNC and turned parts, the machine had several weldments composed of 2D waterjet parts which were fixtured and heat treated post-weld. Some precision assemblies in this ground side equipment were laser tracked during integration to locate hydraulic actuators. Designed the simple high pressure hydraulic circuit that actuated the system. This system was the company's first use of a formal Teamcenter review and release process.Designed tube seam welds for manufacturing via human, orbital track, and robotic arm welding. Optimized welds for cost and material with respect to structural limits and welding code. Specced appropriate orbital and robotic arm systems for purchase and installed them onsite (6DOF arms welded fixtured flat parts and orbital robots welded tubes).Led testing of "The Big Tube" system in Permit Confined Spaces: made sure everyone was trained, all ingresses were logged, appropriate PPE was available, and protocols were followed. Installed interior and exterior strain gauges and thermocouples onto tube interfaced via simple Labview VI.Created several methods of reducing steel mass/cost in the tube (see patents).
  • Carnegie Mellon University
Mechanical Engineer, Astrobotic Rover “Andy” (Google Lunar X Prize)
Carnegie Mellon University Aug 2014 - May 2015
    Pittsburgh, Pa, Us
Led Camera Systems team, down selected camera options including sensor and optics and designed mounting arrangements to meet the requirements for field of view, stereo pair, and degrees of freedom (motorized pan/tilt mast head)Designed, performed, and documented radiation testing for bitflips on protoflight computer as part of winning $500,000 milestone (as part of a total $2 Million raised) Demo’d and pitched rover at event in Los Angeles to astronauts, businessmen, and investors leading to investment of $250,000 at XPrize $40,000/seat eventDesigned and implemented conceptual demo using Oculus virtual reality and head tracking (Video at bit.ly/shafrir)
  • Spaceil
Summer Internship, Lunar Lander “Beresheet” (Google Lunar X Prize)
    Spaceil May 2014 - Aug 2014
Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel, Il
Led intern project to design, build, configure, and test CubeSat nanosatellite system.Tested communications technologies for use in spacecraft.SpaceIL Beresheet Spacecraft later went on to launch, perform several successful burns, reach translunar injection, reach moon orbit, and perform landing maneuvers... Unfortunately, a last minute part failure ended up causing the spacecraft to land much faster than expected.
  • Carnegie Mellon University
    Undergraduate Researcher
Carnegie Mellon University May 2012 - May 2014
    Pittsburgh, Pa, Us
Performed study on steel peritectic transformations with guidance from US Steel, presented published results at Association for Iron & Steel Technology Conference 2013.Assisted graduate student with project on dephosphorization kinematics during double slag process for steel production.Spearheaded $50,000 upgrade to high-temperature confocal scanning laser microscope, increasing heating power output by 50% and while increasing stability of heating controller. Thermocouple signal and digital video would be sent through a DAQ to a Labview VI that would display and record temperature data along with the video and clock.
  • Carnegie Mellon University
    Resident Advisor
